Any suggestions of how to re-attach the lower rudder pintle? (Claridge wood Phantom - self draining double floor)

One of the screws holding it in has half come out whilst sailing it yesterday. It's quite loose in the hole - I've tried retightening it, and theres not much 'bite'. Obvious answer is a bigger screw but it goes through the pintle and an alloy plate before going into the wood hull and I don't think theres a lot of clearance for anything a bigger diameter - longer perhaps, but is it likely there will be anymore wood for it to go into screw into beyond the existing 2" screw?

Would drilling it out much bigger, say 1/2", and epoxying a dowel in work?

My preference would be to put a hatch in the floor and through bolt it. Might have to be two hatches, one each side of the centre spine if there is one. Good for ventilating the rot trap that a false floor on a wood boat provides.

Epoxying in a piece of wood ought to work though. I think I'd try simply filling the hole with a microfibre rich epoxy mix and drilling a new pilot hole first though as being a minimum effort first solution.

Doubt theres enough depth at transom to get a useful hatch in. Difference between inner and outer skins there isn't much more than the drain plugs that are in the transom.

Provided wood not rotten a slightly thicker screw would work, the Dowell would also work, not sure about your level of expertise so apologies in advance, you need to drill a pilot hole in Dowell, drill needs to be diameter of shaft of screw, easy way is to lie drill on top of screw and make sure you can see threads.

Or make a bigger alloy plate and add a screw each side?

In this context you only need enough depth to get a socket in to hold a nut on the end of the bolt, you don't need to be able to get a hand in there.
