Conversation cane up today on whether we should have more discards in a ten race club series?

To make the basis of the two sides simple consider that

1). More discards rewards the talented sailors that can’t make every race.

2). Less discards rewards the club members who make it out every race.

In a ten race series of races, how many races should count and what’s your thinking?

I think it depends on the club. What number/percentage of your competitors complete 4 races, 5 races, 6 races 7 races etc? Look at past results and see how many people get how many races in. With those number in front of you I imagine you'll be left with only two or maybe three choices that aren't patently ridiculous.
Note there's always an advantage in doing as many races as you can, because you can start discarding results in conditions that didn't suit you.

I think most people at club level sail a race for the sake of that race.
On the day, the series is not very important, for a series over 5 or 10 weeks.
I would suggest 4 discard out of 10 races. Few people can make every race, so that's typically 1 or 2 actual discards and 2 or 3 no-shows.
Not every series needs to be the same.

We run half plus one to count for anything over 2 weekends long and a single discard for anything else over 4 races

so the discard profile would look like this, or if you use sailwave its s/2+1

0,0,0,1,1,2,2,3,3,4,4,5,5....

our series are typically 18~ races long and are competitive until the end

Same as we use. I think most people in the fleet are happy with it. I've never heard complaints. Our main series is 30-32 races spread over the whole season, so you need plenty of discards, but going any higher becomes silly. We have a small group who manage half or more of the races and who race for the series, but as said earlier, there are a lot of crews who are more interested in the results on a single race basis.

How come your club choose to race a season long series rather than a split seasonal multi series season?

I guess equal points concessions could favour the sailor who raced more often at the club.

We have 3 split seasonal weekend series, but one big series for the weekday evenings. It seems to work, and people are generally happy with it.

We have growth fleets that are looking for class racing as a series despite starting in mixed handicap for Aeros, Merlin Tockets and possibly soon Solos too. They are trialling the merlinandaero league scoresheet this season for the Wednesday series.
