I love em

Ive never managed to get a sail on one but would love to, theres something special about them for sure. The only thing that puts me off is having to bag the kite but im sure youd get used to it pretty quickly

They are great.  They have a  deceptively simple layout.  They may be 20 years old but they have a very efficient rig and sweet hull.  The kite is pretty big and can be bagged quickly when racing upwind downwind courses.  The bag is much kinder on the kite than a shute

Triangular courses are a pain but pursuade your race committee to give you upwind downwind racing and these boats come alive.

They are a big learning curve, even if you a good Laser/Lark/Ent etc sailer.  They are not very forgiving and severly punish mistakes.  I 've seen crews get away with mistakes in RS800s that would have put us in the drink in a flash.

The biggest challenge is keeping the boat on the boil.  As soon as it slows, comes off the plane, you're a dead man.

Thats the good thing about them, hopefully it will be a challenging sail

I'm really tempted too. They look awesome and have a terrifying amount of sail.

They do.  I may have tracked one down. Its always good for a laugh.  Plus I havent been to hospital in ages and maybe sailing one may help me get there.

We bought one in April this year. After about a six year break from racing 420's competitvely we wanted to give ourselves a bit of a challenge. The learning curve is very steep and you need to be pretty fit and agile, but these boats are great fun, incredibly fast and relatively inexpensive (our one cost us £2000). Hopefully we'll be going to the training weekend with Chris Draper in March and doing a few of the events on the circuit next year. Can thoroughly recommend it if you want some cheap thrills!

I'm not sure that myself and the guy I would sail it woth could be classed as fit an agile but we will have to have a bash.

I would agree you need to be pretty nimble about the boat but they are not blood and guts machines.  They respond better to the delicate touch.

Being a hiking boat, you can really lock yourself into straps, so, when it gets really exciting and your mates in their RS 800s are being thrown off their trapezes you can just hang on in there.

The kite is 312 sq.ft giving a total downwind sail area of 495 sq.ft.   This is why you need to be locked in before the boat takes off like a bullet.

Is it true that the rondar ones are slightly better than the RS version?

are they easy to right from capsize?

Olly

I have sent you a PM

Re: righting from a capsize.  There is a knack, but its pretty straightforward . . .and getting back into the boat is a breeze - just press the wing down and swim onto it.

Hi Olly

You must be running out of classes to try

Mind you i can't talk, I've just bought a 59er for playing in.  Still doing my racing in the Phantom though.

Same here with the 59er, but I will do some events in it next year I think.  I looked at the B14 but decided 1 - I'm too fat, 2 - Its a bit harder to crew, I can take novice crews in the 59er and 3 - B14 is probably too fast for Bowmoor.  Are you going to sail the B14 at Tewkesbury? I would probably come and watch that!

Weight range I think is minimum 150Kg upwards to 180+.  Not sure what I am doing in July yet so can't promise that!

The web site is http://www.59er.org.uk/ - http://www.59er.org.uk/

Which is run by Ovington - who also have some pages.  Its not kept up to date but has some nice pics.  What you don't get is an impression of is how wide it is.

Apparently Dave Hall is going to try to get an event list sorted but I was thinking of taking it to some of the asymetric handicap events. If I can figure out how to make it go.

Unfortunately I wouldn't bank on a 59er racing circuit building unless 9er events are held at a club where there are a few 59ers. This boat is superb at all in events and in certain wind strenghts unbeatable. If you can find a second hand one for around 4k they represent superb value for money. They are very robust with low running cost. Downwind is easier on the legs than a B14 which should be hiked where as the 59er is still rapid going fairly deep.

Yeah I see your point, but the 59er is a little to pricey at the moment. I was looking at something fast and powerful that I can take to mixed fleet racing events and just have some fun with.

I sail on a river and there is not much chance of racing either a B14 or 59er on it. that is why I want something that is fairly cheap and my friend has just picked up a B14 for a grand.

Suits me fine, I campaign the Phantom so don't really have the time to take on another class with a regular circuit - but I would like to have a go on a decent stretch of water for a blast every now and then.  I believe Dave Hall is going to assess the interest of 59er owners and look at joining in the 9er events.  I would be up for 2 or 3 I should think.

Its a fair cop! I am trying to reduce my fleet down to 2 though.  Victoria has not been showing much interest so I thought if I am going to keep a second boat I am going to go as fast as I can!

Sounds good - it was funny when I mentioned I was thinking about getting a 59er a nice orderly queue started forming...

I see on the main Y&Y site there a HEWL notice of race, I checked on the HISC site but couldn't find it.  If there is a handicap fleet for that it may be worth popping down for a play.

Mike T @ Bowmoor is first in queue - he is the other Phantom sailor.  We have been having really good racing recently. He gave me a good thrashing last Sunday morning

Really.

I was meant to be joining this winter with the other members from TSC that have joined but I have an alb now which needs adjustable shrouds fitting and it is not as easy as it sounds.  £300 worth of blocks after and I still have'nt worked it out.

I have to do it cause i'm doing the nationals next year in torbay and will get our arses kicked down wind and on the reach if we don't have it.
