Imagine the scene.  You got yourself a brand new foiling moth, you've entered the nationals.  It's a sunny August day and there's absolutley no wind...

A new type of competition is needed.  A drag race

Two moths, each towed by a rescue boat until they're going fast enough to foil.  Release the cord as you pass the start line and glide on foils to a finish mark 400 yards away.  Winner progresses to the next round.  Like the AC, only better.

I've never seen one in the flesh, but I'd have thought with the sail up and 12 knots apparent wind (from the tow), you could get quite far - even on a windless day.  Alternatively, whoever gets the furthest wins!

But that 12 knots of apparent is square on the nose ... they are not perpetaul motion machines

But you could bear away.  Oh, hang on...

An ideal boat for a fat bas.... sorry person then

Sail a moth perfect for the lightweights and when there is no wind the bigger guy provides the inertia for drag racing

I know it's not really in the spirit of this website but why not dump the rig completely and just see how fast you can tow a moth before it gets totally out of control? Jumping off the wake could be challenging!

I think it would be totally out of control before you start - the rig is vital for balance...

Wouldn't that be akin to water skiing? Has anyone tried foiling skis?

I've seen a bizarre thing with a seat and a foil from underneath but it looked a bit dull compared to proper skiing.

At the risk of being flamed for going off-topic, the idea of foiling water skis
sounds rather exciting. Imagine skimming along standing up a foot above
the water!

Didn't someone once try doing it with a windsurfer?

Erm... going back a bit but was the basic idea of the thread to tow 2 identical boats (most of the foils are one of 2 manufacturers, and even they are very similar, modern boats are similar weights too) at identical speeds. Release them at identical times on a near-enough identical bit of water and see which one takes the longest to flop back to the wet stuff?

Do I need to keep repeating the word 'Identical' or is this starting to sound silly yet?

It will never catch on...........

what is better is foiling battleships, they could probably keep foiling for a while after you have turned the engines off

Nope, I stand by my original comment which for accuracy is above. The key bit being COMPARED TO PROPER SKIING. The problem with the foiling garden chair is that (in the video I saw) you couldn't cant it over far enough to go really wide and generate lots of speed.

i want one of them. *ahem* getting back to the original topic: it wouldnt work. moths arent heavy enough to keep momentum for that long and if you had the sails up wouldn't that just be more drag? im not a moth sailor so i wouldnt know but i would have thought no rig would bring the centre of gravity closer to the water making it more stable.

What is fun is when you tow a little inflatable rib about 5-6 foot in length. Behind a 5 metre 50 horsepower rib with some one in it. You then get the boat going as fast as possible and gently steer and see the little rib fly like 6 feet in the air . The Fun is when you get to see their faces tee hee

Only 6 feet?

"Proper" use of doughnuts and mini bananas behind a 300bhp parascending boat is far more fun

("Proper" means completely ignoring the "Do Not Tow Above 15 mph" warning printed on the inflatable and taking the thing flat out)

......................

Disclaimer - Hitting water at 40+ knots when coming off a wave isn't generally particularly good for your back or neck ......

Why on earth would you want to tow a doughnut at speeds of LESS than
15mph? Have these people no idea of fun?

I am loving that middle photo of the foiling chair... he's got the 'you know it' point going down a treat!

I got whip lash when I rudder stalled and through me out the boat foiling at about 16-17knots. Now I can only turn left.
