Interesting times for the International Sunfish Class.
Fortunately this affects very few of use this side of the pond, so we can sit back and munch popcorn, but it seems that MacLaren/Laser performance are having a row with the International Sunfish Class Association, and they have set up a new Class Association and are trying to render the current one impotent.
The Laser Performance Press release is here:

The Sunfish CA President's response is here.

What will really be interesting is the ISAF response.
ISAF could refuse to recognise this new CA, they could stop recognising the old CA, all sorts of possibilities. Maclaren give ISAF serious sponsorship, which will no doubt cause them to think...

Deja vu. I suspect Rastegar's money will win out again. Sure, anyone can set up a fan club (which is all a traditional CA is), but World Sailing will only recognise one and sanction them to organise World championships.

thanks largely to World Sailing's treachery I suspect. I will never understand how they could side with the one who had not stuck to their contractual obligations, failing to pay the designer his due royalties, for years.
Ant of course, what a great job Rastegar is now doing. Anyone not struggled to get official Laser parts when they need them?

AIUI Kirby lost on legal technicalities. The rights and wrongs never seemed to come into it, which seems par for the course for US civil law.

So what does that actually mean for the class?

Sentiment shared here Jim, as for what it means to the class, no idea really... same old, same old: two tier system of club racers vs the circuit guys I guess

It means the class has two main builders worldwide who hate each others guts, have each cost the other a lot of money in litigation, and who have rather different visions for the future of the class.

I thought boats built by Bruce Kirby and associates can't be called, or sailed as, Lasers.
Is he actually allowed to build an identical boat BTW, the IP argument all went a bit beyond my understanding (or at least my will to read the fine print)?

In future whenever I feel aggrieved that I can't change something on one of my boats I'll go and read this https://www.laserinternational.org/rules-and-regulations/illegal-equipment/" rel="nofollow - https://www.laserinternational.org/rules-and-regulations/illegal-equipment/

Most on that list is fair enough; but some seems a bit silly,
Deck ware pads??

The rope holding the traveller block together???????????
I can only see two which might affect the performance of the boat (and I realise I must have too much time on my hands.......

And what of Kirby Inc? Though TBF that's not a Laser but a Kirby Torch
That would throw up an interesting situation with two identical dinghies that are separate classes with different CAs, manufacturers and, presumably, race series.....

Really? I think most of them have the potential to affect performance, with the exception of the ones about sail numbers which are there for other reasons, and maybe one or two others.
They might not be things that are obvious unless you sail the laser...
