Apologies if this has been discussed before, I dont keep up with this forum as much as I used to and this is the first time Ive heard the story

But how can Gavin Reid not win this! Huge respect for all those that made it to the short list, and all I know about this particular entry is what I have read here and on google, so perhaps its been over sold, but if it really happened as reported then.... well he gets my vote

Reading the article you are correct there is no contest there. Whilst Giles and Brian have peaked in their respective disciplines Gavin went way past what could have been expected of him.

I will admit it is more of a humanitarian story that a true yachting story but his contribution to the rescue seems to be  outstanding. I am sure the entire crew played their own part though.

OMG that's worthy of more than some lame yotty of the year title, the guy's a proper hero.

Great job from Gavin Read that should be recognised with some sort of award but is "Yachtsman of the Year" the right one?

Sounds like the YJA need to create some sort of special or bravery award.

Failing that I'm glad he won it. Hat off to the man.

I race dinghys and keel boats so I have the utmost respect for the likes of Giles Scott and Brian Thompson but sailing is so much more than just performance around a race course. Things like this should be recognized by us as sailors, as well as a wider audience.

This might be a good way of getting his bravery recognised...

It is hard to compare the winning of medals or breaking of records with acts of courage, skill and bravery so hard to know who should win the "yachtsman" thing. But no doubt who should be celebrated most for his actions. Just outstanding.

BTW, is Yachtswoman of the year a separate event, for some reason?

I had to google who he was... Maybe that's why people didn't vote?

So Gavin won the award, top marks.
Well done Gavin and well done to those that awarded it to him... for recognizing that there is so much more to being a good sailor than just the ability to sail fast

Congratulations Gavin!

I might not know much about sailing (just yet) but he's pretty inspirational, if he can crack on in the face of adversity...then I've got no excuse!
