Hi I'm new so please be nice

The situation I'm curious about is as follows.
In a handicap race if the race is shortened for the boats towards the middle of the fleet back, what should happen for boats with faster oh which do less laps than boats with slower put who were in front when the race was shortened and completed an extra lap under a dyeing breeze and due to the dyeing breeze is placed behind the faster (py) boats on average lap results?
In other words can a faster boat on oh do less laps and win?

Any rya info to back up would be great.

Thanks in advance

Unless there's something special in the SIs, which there often is, its just the luck of the draw. There are all sorts of circumstances where something like that can happen, another is tide changing. In an ideal world boats in average lap racing should be doing sufficient laps that the last lap isn't that big a component of the race, and race management should be alert enough to finish everyone before the big wind change - and manage a good split in the fleet with out many boats on the 'wrong' side. You just have to remember that every time the wind grossly changes mid race its going to be very hard lines on someone, its just that if its the circumstances you outline its more obvious. Its very hard to explain that though.

+1 it's just the nature of PY racing.I remember winning a pot at RWBSC back in the '60s, I was 12 or 13 and sailing a Heron, the wind picked up towards the end of the race after the good guys and fast boats had finished.... Swings and roundabouts. Average lap reverses the effect to some extent but it will always be perceived as unfair to someone......

 sums it up

it's a risk factor of large lap lengths  in conditions where significant changes in wind conditions are  likely ... shorter the course + more laps  the less impact  one lap  will  have   2laps vs 3  is more an impact than 4 vs 5  or 5 vs 6

yes we all like to have big laps on long courses when the wind might allow it ...
