A9 RACE SCORES IN A SERIES LONGER THAN A REGATTA For a series that is held over a period of time longer than a regatta

Above is quoted from the rules but has no definition in it as to what "regatta" means and makes it completely subjective

For an open, Regatta is fairly easy to define but in a club race where do you draw the line from a few day trophy race to a long series?

do the days have to be consecutive or does it have to be over a certain amount of weeks to then be classified as a long series?

Opinions?

I imagine that its deliberately left up to the organisers.

But for my money, if you expect, by and large, the same boats to turn out for every race then the short series scoring works well, but if the number of entrants is going to vary greatly between races then the long series scoring is preferable.

For what it's worth, I have always thought that to be a regatta the sailing days had to be consecutive (with perhaps a rest day) typically over 7 days while a longer series would be held once a week over a longer time period eg 2 or 3 months.

While it is reasonable to expect all sailors at a regatta to turn out each day but over a longer series held once a week, sailors may not be able to sail each day due to other committments. Hence the difference in scoring - no of competitors in regatta + 1 for dnf and dns while for a longer series no in race + 1 for dnf.

Regatta as used in sailing means an event over consecutive days.
