Im looking to be in Plymouth Uni starting sept 2006 and just starting to think about getting on the water.

Currently live in Dubai and have sailed 49ers rs 800s Formula 18s and many others

Looking to get back in to maybe an rs800 49er or laser 4000 circuit.

Is there a large sailing community down there and whats the best sort of way to go fleet wise????

Is it easy enough to find a boat to crew on ?????

All knowledge appreciated

As far as the Uni goes have a look at

http://www.sailpower.org.uk/ - http://www.sailpower.org.uk/

and

http://upyc.upsu.plym.ac.uk/ - http://upyc.upsu.plym.ac.uk/

The University clubs are pretty well organised and have crew registers etc.

The Uni has both a Yacht Club and a Sailing/Power boat club. Joint memebership of both is £50, been on a cruise with the Yacht Club which was briliant and will be doing racing over the winter the time. The Sailing club does team racing in Fireflies and Laser 2000s.  The socials are great too if not a little bit messy but everyone within both clubs are really friendly. There should be a few Cherubs at least two 49ers and various other skiffs within the sailing club by the time you make it here. As for racing outside the Uni, there seem to be quite a few RS 800s and Laser 4000s that go out on a regular basis. Good fleets for Lasers too. The keelboats are always looking for crews as well. I think you'll really enjoy sailing out of Plymouth when you get here. What course are you planning to do?

Looking at doing Marine Studies in Ocean Yachting which i hope should be a good laugh. What sort of prices are you looking at for a half decent 49er with a couple of suits of sails is is hugly expensive??? If i could find one now i could ship it to dubai for the rest of my time here then ship it back to Plymouth.

  • Probably about £5000 - £6000 for a decent 49er. Have a quick look on the International 49er site, you might be able to get a boat from Europe pretty cheaply. Make sure the boat has at least one good set of Prydes and a Rev-9 mast before you consider it. Sounds like a really good course you're considering, I'm doing Marine Sport Technology and its been quite good.

sailing in plymouth is great. There are loads off oppotunities to sail there. I sail dinghies and Yachts there. The tide is quite tricky to master and sometimes the wind can be a little bit shifty if it's from over the land. Lots of J80's and J24's. Good IRC fleet. Dinghies at Mount Batten, high performance mainly. Hope to see you around sometime!
