Ignoring the usual class promotion and fleet racing etc that
sways your decision in choosing your primary boat. What would be your choice for a second “fun
boat”. Let’s say you had an hour to kill
and just wanted to blast about, which boat would you choose for its ability to
put a smile on your face?
Although I doubt I will ever own one, I enjoy sailing a

RS600.... it would teach you a lot about pure dinghy sailing, and remind you again, why you have a sensible 'first boat'

nope, it will just make seem sensible and grown up and know when a good race is a good race, and the box you shift it is irrelevant if they're all the same.... not really fitting for an internet persona though is it?

What's the most fun to sail?
It rather depends. Pottering around Chichester Harbour with the grand kids on a summers day in an old Ent would do it for me. It puts a smile on my face

I would love one of the most modern types of low rider moth... A skippy or something, they just look so difficult to sail, but so rewarding when you would finally get the hang of it. Shame there is no class for the latest lowriders and they are rather scarce :P

Something with a trapeze that is easier to handle for those past their prime. Farr 3.7 - you could ever find one? Vortex?

RS800 Provided you have someone to sail with and a decent stretch of water.

I know that when I had knee problems and couldn't sail a Finn I missed it, so I got another. Just the feel of the Finn in a good breeze makes me glad to be alive.
For a one off treat, it would be an Imperium Scow low rider International Moth in a breeze, in waves on Sandgreen Bay. Just a thought , but isn't there a place for the low rider International Moth as a seperate class or a sub division of the class?

Can anyone suggest a better boat to take into the surf near the shoreline and spend 40mins doing highly illegal kinetics on the waves?

I think originally the class tried to have lowrider trophies, but in pretty short order almost everyone who was capable of sailing a lowrider to a decent level had bought a foiler and there were just no competitors for lowrider prizes...

Thanks, just a thought, I haven't sailed them since I was a student, I turned into a second row forward and thus ended up in a Finn but had a great time. I would have thought it would have been a great idea as a class for people who wanted to develop their own ideas without the cost of foiling. As a student I seem to recall a lowrider was affordable, home builds, etc. Usually with a hangover

A bunch of lowrider Moth sailors use the cvrda forum to communicate - everything from 1960 is Europa Moths to Magnum 9.9's. Their aim is to get together and have fun at some point soon.
As for the question, many of the boats suggested are hard to sail - an hour once in a while would be spent swimming. So, it needs to be simple to sail, but with the sensation of speed, unless you are already used to boats that fall over if you let go. This is where GRF got to before designing the VTwin, isn't it?!
How about a Catapult - that way it can live in bags when you aren't using it, then blow it up and away you go!

Will RS be bringing a board out soon?! Plenty of views on the Y&Y forum as to what it should be like...

well they've already got a bloke on the ground at the world's* globe's largest board manufacturer - CMI Thailand.... it's where the RS100 is made.
* I must not to use the term 'world' when referring to RS sailing, RS events etc until such time as there is an IJ on station to clarify the class rules. 'Global', 'Glow Ball' or even 'Goebbels' would be more acceptable nomenclature

Yes I love my Vareo and it’s a lot of fun and perfect for me
as I am fairly new to sailing
I suppose this hypothetical question stems from my limited
amount of exposure to other boats. I
have sailed all the club boats and a few cats on holidays but nothing to “exotic”. We had the Vortex national at YDSC the other
week and watching 15+ of them all popping kites and screaming downwind did look
like a lot of fun. I suppose it’s like
your perfect weekend car. You are happy doing
the daily commute in the Volvo but would like a two seater sports car in the garage
for the occasional weekend blast.

I think this post is going to cost me, it has reminded me about Classic International 14s, my favourite was my 1976 Opus II, a really beautiful cold moulded Charlie Bullock design that I used to sail with Vicky. Anybody got a set of drawings?

Oh, well, if we aren't worried about actually having to sail or be at a location with it except in our heads, then for me it would be an A Class Cat off a very large lake in Europe, a Swift Solo somewhere nice in America, a windsurfer Robbie Naish style in Hawaii, or (and this one it is only the location that is the problem) a Sunfish parked on the beach next to the Hobie cat by a beach bar in Barbados.
Ah, that all sounds better than a small gravel pit in Wiltshire... though actually, the Lightning would be nice in those locations, too - apart from on Jaws with Robbie, of course!
