Hi all, Looking to get another cat as I'm missing that speed factor!! Used to race Unicorns and Dart 18's back in Norfolk. Having relocated to Devon, I'm having a bit of trouble in locating a south devon club that will accept an old Tornado before I go out and find one. Thing is, I'm not particularly interested in racing. My main aim is to get out on the oggin and go fast. I've tried Starcross, but they are limited to 5.9's and Dart 18's, both of which don't really do it for me! Brixham only takes Hobies and the only slight glimmer of hope so far is Dittisham, but they are full up! Nothing against the other classes at all, I just prefer the layout of the original Tornado over the 5.9 - not least the extra beam of the tornado allows a bit of extra room to play with. I guess I'm gonna have to 'go with the flow' and go down the 5.9 route unless anyone knows of a club that has enough room for the big T. Suggestions, or reasons why a 5.9 would be better (other than you can tow it!) would be appreciated!!! ------------- Currently TBC! The restriction at Starcross might be a physical one owing to the rail bridge you have to pass through to get into the club - I maybe wrong though.
Have you looked up North Devon Yacht Club at Instow? They may be more accommodating. May not be the most convenient location for you in South Devon though ------------- |

The bridge is the restricting factor, not least the club looks chocked full anyway so I guess they have no need to expand to other classes. Had a look at Instow - It's too far really to justify the needs!! 70 miles each way!! ------------- Currently TBC! The cats come in from the water side anyway so it's not down to the bridge. How about Exe SC, they've sailed 18ft Skiffs out of there so must have some room.... ------------- Needs to sail more... |

I think the limit at Starcross (apart from wanting to encourage class racing) is the access width down our two slipways through the sea wall - its a pretty tight squeeze for a 5.9 and the Tornado is 0.61 m (2 feet in old money) wider. [ Dittisham with a Tornado on a busy weekend would be an event I'd buy tickets for  - its tricky enough navigating throught the moorings, toppers and sandbanks in a what I think is known colloqually as a 4knot sh*tbox - a 16knot cat would be very entertaining ]Have you tried the Mountbatten Sailing Centre - it has straightforward access to Plymouth Sound where you could have a lot of fun in a Tornado. |

Yeah that is a bit far. I had heard that Starcross was getting a bit full, but sounds like they'd accommodate you if you had the right boat to fit their class? Maybe try the Hurri with the kite? Can't remember what they call that version ------------- |

| Its a Hurricane SX and most (all?) of our fleet have converted to use the kite. They regularly have 5-6 boats racing. |
