Hi I have joined the forum to ask some questions as to what boat I should be looking at getting I have just turned 40 and have always wanted to sail I have not done much sailing I crewed for my dad many years ago in an enterprise,fleetwind and flying fifteen but only a few times, I live on the Exe estuary so plenty of space I am looking mainly to sail solo and for pleasure exploring the estuary I have no preference to wood or Grp but it will be kept on a beach or drying mooring I already have a rowing boat and open fishing boat so it will just be for a sailing fix. Now I am not the smallest guy being 6'3" and 23st but I am not unfit but now working to get weight down cycling to work etc. so I need some space to move about in I do like traditional rigs gaff ,lug ,Gunter and such so I'm not really a speed freak I would prefer stable as I'll be doing a little sea shore gathering and cooking. So there it is can anyone offer any advice on boats I should be looking at my budget isn't set I can save and wait for the right boat. Dave

Oh I do like that yes probably not what goes down well on dinghy forums but I'm guessing very expensive I must confess I do own an 18 foot gaffer which my father and I built but I have no idea how to sail it. Dave

I'd recommend visiting Exe Sailing club http://www.exe-sailing-club.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=61&Itemid=77 and doing a training session with them. It's probably better to join a club as you will get more out of the sport. Jen who runs the training is a great trainer.

They are the opposite side to me I'm in cockwood I wasn't sure if a club was the way to go as they all seem to only want racers and they definately won't want a heavy crew. But I could be wrong. Dave

You will find some clubs have a cruising section. Your 18 foot gaffer sounds ideal for your needs. I was going to recommend you look at Drascombes (several varieties) or the Cornish Crabber range. ------------- Bonnie Lass Contender 1764 |

Do you think it's possible to sail it solo it's near 22' with the sprit and displaces 1 1/4 tons but as I say my nerves taking her out to sea stop me this was just after launch a year ago she was put on her mooring and been there since all I need do is put the sails on. I don't suppose there's anyone near Teignmouth fancies helping me to sail her.

Welcome to the forum! You might find people of more similar interests in the forum at ybw.com, less racing centred than on here. That's not to say desert us, many of us have wide interests in sailing. There are lots of PBO type people sailing similar size and bigger singlehanded. You might find someone to sail with you a few times while you get up to speed. Sounds like you will have some 'sea sense' from various boats. Have fun! |
