Hi,

I bought an RS200 a little while ago and asked here for a few tips to get it up to date as it was an old boat that hadnt been modernised other than a twin patch conversion. Well since asking that I turned it over to give the bottom a clean before taking it down the club and found a hole in it. Being purple it wasnt the easiest to fix and repair, but anyway, 6 weeks on its nearly ready to go down the club.

The problem I have now is that I put all the sails up for the first time in the drive today and noticed that the head of the kite is some 2.5ft down from where it enters the mast. And before you ask, yes the kite is the right way around :) I phoned my brother who also has an RS200, but a newer one, and he said that his spin head sheave is a lot lower than on my boat. On mine it enters the mast half way between the first and second batten.

So my question really is what is the history behind this and then secondly where should the spinnaker sheave be? I'm sure there will be an exact measurement for where it is to be located to be legal?

Any advice much appreciated

All the best

Dave

On mine there are 2 sheaves. The top sheave was part of the square running system (now redundant on ours). The spinny halyard exits the lower sheave, this sheave is directly above (inch or so) the fore stay attachment point.

Has your mast not got this lower sheave?

Here's the RS diagram:

Hi,

On mine the spin halyard exits the top sheave and there was a plastic gromit with some rope coming out of it with a block on it that the spin halyard ran through. like a take up slack system that you get on other asymmetric boats, I cut that out this morning as it was redundant, but obviously instead there needs to be a sheave for the halyard to come through there instead.

Do you know if there is a specific height for the spinnaker head sheave so that I dont go putting one in thats illegal?

Cheers

Dave

The rope you cut out was not redundant.  It is the tweaker line that keeps the spini halyard tight against the mast at the correct take off point on older masts

You need to reinstate the tweaker line or put a sheave in with the top of the sheave pulley at the same height as the grommet.

Suggest you ask first next time before making any further alterations. ;)

I would say you want the bearing point of the sheave pulley at the same height as the tweaker line gromet rather than the top of the sheave as mentioned above.
Or for a simpler solution just reinstate the tweaker line, just tie off the other end on the D ring on the front of the mast so that the tweaker line is always tight.

Sounds about right. Bung the tweaker back on for an easy solution.

My boat is parked a few miles away so I can't take dimensions right now.

Thats cool, thanks for all your help,

I've got to take the mast down again anyway so I'll just move the sheave down so that the top of it is the same level as the gromit that i pulled out

That'll learn me Big smile

Thanks again

On mine the bottom fixing hole on the lower sheave doubles up as a forestay attachment point.

I should check the class rules very carefully to make sure you get it in the right position if I were you.

Second the suggestion to check the class forum.

Thanks for the suggestions.. I found this in the rules which clarifies it..

On masts supplied with a plastic grommet where the tweaker line exits, the grommet
may be replaced with a sheave box. The hole cut in the mast to install the sheave box
shall incorporate the original hole for the plastic grommet, and the exit point from the
sheave box shall be within 10mm of the exit point of the plastic grommet. The presence
of the tweaker line in the mast is optional
