Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but since quite a few cherub guys hang out here I'm sure someone can answer my question. It's the only fleet I've seen people mixing epoxy just before the start of a race!

When making a cylindrical section (eg. spin pole, mast, tiller extension etc) the (very simplistic) process as I understand it is:

1. Strip any paint and clean with acetone if it's a repair

2. Cut the fibre matt to size(s) needed. (lay up).

3. Goo resin everywhere

4. Stick carbon and use a roller to squeeze out air and make sure carbon is wetted out properly. I guess this is a matter of judgement!

5. Repeat 2 -4 for extra layers

Is any form of compression needed in the proccess?

Also why do some carbon spars have a glossy smooth finish while some (eg RS800 spin pole) not? Is this purely cosmetic? Surely it must add weight?

I think the 800 pole is glass rather than carbon ...

Sounds like your on the right tack..

You can use special shrink tape avaialble from some composites retailers or peel ply. the latter is like a nylon fabric you use to help get better fibre consolidation and then peel it off when everythings dried. This gives the rougher finish you see and the smoother finish is acheived either by sanding that back and varnishing it or by using shrink tape. Shrink tapes good but its a bit of a pain to use and you need a method of heating it up. Somepeople use a hot air gun rather than a big oven which is what you would use if you had one...

Cherub plug coming up - have a look at some of our building / technical pages on http://www.sailingsource.com/cherub - www.sailingsource.com/cherub for a bit more.

yeh, u really dont want excess resin in there, you want as little as possible when laying up laminates, what is it that you are interested in doing?

The difference in shinyness, is quite often related to the resin used - on masts etc on 700s, 800s n so on an final coat of UV proof epoxy is used which produces the shiny effect.

The composite shops will HATE me. Ply ply is sold in a dress making shop as suit lining..... Far cheaper.

What are you making?

But lots of compression is good MORE is better

you can wrap some dry glass tape around the layup in a spiral to get the compression it will wet itself out from the resin squezed out of the carbon. it can be difficult to get really smooth but you do get a sacrificial layer of glass over the top of your expensave carbon.

Peel ply is V good and you can use electrical tape to get a small ammount of compresion.

If it doesn't break it's too heavy; if it does it wasn't built right

Whoa!!! Tell me more! What do I ask for, 'cos I guess they dont call it peel ply!  Have you used it? Does it work? And how does the cost compare? (AUS$ is fine...)

Cheers

Off to the dressmaking shops then!!

They don't by any chance do a 300g/sm carbon/kevlar mix twill weave for use in hems do they?
