Hi All,

New to the forum and new to sailing in general.

I am looking to buy my first boat in spring and looking for some tips on what to look out for, tips etc that will help me with my quest to get back on the water!

I used to sail when I was a boy and for 30 years I have missed it!

I know its a very broad question but I literally do not know where to start so all help is greatful

Thanks in advance!

Do you want to race?
Where are you planning on sailing?
How big are you?
Age?
How fit/agile are you?
Do you mind getting wet?
What did you sail 30 years ago?

Generally things havent changed that much in 30 years so maybe its a good idea to start off near where you left off....

If you want to race, often the most important question is: what are the most popular (or supported) classes at your local club?

Hi,

Before you start to buy a boat:-

1) Where are you, and where are you planning on sailing?

2) Check out the sailing clubs in your area. In my experience, they're welcoming and will show you their facilities and the types of dinghy sailed.  Choose one you like, then chat with the group round the tea bar/bar.

You'll probably find that there's a couple of people who are happy to take you out for a spin - and you can make your own mind up from that experience (my club hold an open day in the summer - a number of members do short sailing excursions on the lake. It's a good way to see if a particular dinghy suits you!)

Once you have an idea of type of boat, check out the class website for s/hand - or links to the builders...

Certainly, don't hold back, but there's usually no need to rush into the "let's buy a boat and then find where to sail it" syndrome.

Good hunting,

Colin

Definitely a good idea to look around your local clubs.
Even if you don't race, it's good to have a safety boat out, and it's sociable ashore.
Find a group of people you fit in with, then decide on the boat.
If you want to race, it's best to find a fleet with people who are good enough to learn from, but not olympic standard who will be over the horizon.
I would suggest buying a boat with an eye to being able to sell it on reasonably, as your needs and tastes may get more specific as you get involved.

It isn't clear if you are talking dinghies or yachts, but I guess the advice above applies to both - go to the places where the boats are. If yachting, it is far easier to get a job as crew.
