Hi all Does anyone know if 420's are supposed to have a transom flap? Our old girl had one but we've got hacked off with water spewing through it on light days so out came the fibre glass and it flaps open no more!! Im also having a problem with the self bailer so when i find a suitably small socket thats coming off and its getting a nice new silicon seal before it goes bcak on. Any tips? Gem 420 48096 |

Replacing the silicon seals seem the best place to start. Also when you
take it off play around with it to see if its locking properly in the
up position. If not I'd be replacing it. Used to sail a 420 now and
again, and the boat I was sailing had the transom flaps but had elastic
attached to it which ran along to a metal hook on the base of the
centreboard casing. The elastic held the flaps tight against the
transom and I believe the elastic was replaced any time it was looking
like wearing. On the windier days, the flaps were really good for
draining the boat of any water.

cool! thanks for that, yeah there were wee elastic straps, so maybe it was standard... just the flap was a piece of acrylic gaffa taped on so thought it had to go!!!! and it was causing a crack to appear!! Notice youre in helensburgh, my better half dad used to keep his boat in Rhu, theres an Atlantic 75 on station there great boat, same as ours.. u on the crew?? gem (in Aberystwyth) |

I only occassionally do the bigger boat stuff so not really crewing on
anything with a keel. Did he used to keep the boat in the Marina or at
the Royal Northern?

it was on a mooring near Drum. Westerly fulmar. yachts are cool! less milage to get to scotland than by road, and much more fun! You should join your local lifeboat crew ILBs are even more fun than 420s and go out in much more interesting weather |

We were too big to be sailing the 420 when we were, so used to go out
in absolutely balistic conditions, leaving a Laser 5000 on the shore
for the less windier days. Used to love it and at one Reggatta, the
race officer messed up on our results because he couldn't believe we'd
done more laps than the cats and skiffs. Got it sorted & had a full
sheet of firsts. That was one of the most fun times we've had on the
water, and strangely for me, we never swam. Wouldn't mind doing the
Lifeboats at some point but don't they involve a lot of committment,
and any time I've done rescue duty, or been sitting in a rib
instructing, I always get the feeling that I wish I was on something

I've sailed a lot of different 420s (our school fleet has 12 or so, and
I've sailed them elsewhere as well!) and some have transom flaps, some
have bung holes. Which company is yours made by and what sort of age is
it? I've seen flaps on Lenams and Rondars about 5 years old, I think
all the others have bungs instead. We don't tend to use the flaps much,
on the Lenams they've been pulled off and have duck tape stuck over the
back and the Rondars they tend to be taped shut. Most people moan that
if they aren't they leak, but if you've got your trim sorted (you need
to be well forward) then I've had no problems. If your trim's right the flaps will be clear of the water. |

Its a Rondar and im guessing from the number about 95 build.. so 10yrs or so old prob. Ex UKSA boat so loads of dents but does the job for us fine!! We're prob on the heavy side for her, (combined weight 23 stone) but never mind, as it enables us to go out in fun stuff, as my man does the trapezing and i drive, his weight keeps her up and screaming along!! I do find that when she gets to limit speed she wavers about a bit.. no idea why. Great boat though, especially as we dont have the best sailing conditions here, and usually sail alone, she dosent seem that prone to capsize and there is plenty room for flares, vhf, snacks etc. And has the fun of a trapeze/spinnaker etc. All we need to do now is work out how to be flying the spinny and trapez eat same time.... :0) |

| Yeah I've sailed a few ex-UKSA boats! They're used by a couple of schools I've raced against. I've had problems before with 20 stone in the boat - just couldn't get the thing flat! Weren't using the trapeze though, not allowed to with team racing, which sucks! By limit speed do you mean hull speed, i.e. when you start planing? |

Hmm, dont really know, just the speed it gets to when its really windy and 13 stone is as flat on the trapeze as he can get and im hiked out all the way and she still feels like she might capsize.... Can anyone give me advice about trailer weights???? We have a combi trailer and have been invited away with the students for a weekend (hurray!! a chance to be studenty again!! (not often to be had when you are a teacher!!!) and theyve asked us to bring a uni topper as well as our 420, so... .... would a topper, a 420 and a combi trailer add up to more than 750kg??? (i got my licence after 1997 so thats the heaviest i can tow without doing a test)

Without doing the maths I doubt you'd have a problem, and you can always roof-rack the topper if you have too
