My advice is: Just buy one! They are very rewarding to sail. Although they are tipy etc. They are one of those boats that as you progress it goes faster. And you always learn in it!

I don't know for certain, but I think they're actually different items - narrow set and wide set - rather than one item set in different positions (like the Blaze). |

on the subject of racks: how do you change from wide to narrow? is it just a case of sliding them in and out a la 800 or is it more difficult than that? |

The 600 from a laser would be no problem, it is afterall a glorified laser! I sold my radial to get a 600, and the trapezing i had done up to then was as a crew so i learnt to helm from the wire on the 600. As long as you keep it bolt flat and moving fast, you'll have no problem.
I would actuay say DONT try before you buy if its a 600 you're thinking about. The first few goes will probably be quite ego bruising so if you try one first you might come away not giving the boat the full chance it deserves. You're a great size for the boat, just make sure you get the wide racks. Doug |

If you're looking for a trapeze s/hander then I'd say a Contender is an easier start than a 600. Contender is actually a fairly forgiving boat, considering - sure you'll capsize, but you'll see it coming and you'll know what you've done wrong. From what I've heard the 600 is a little more 'twitchy', and fully-battened mains can be a handful when you're getting used to a boat. Weight-wise you're probably towards the lighter end for a Contender, but its still do-able. |

I'd say its a big step - but hell what an achievement if you manage it.

The 600 is a good boat to learn. Everyone has different experiences to learning to trapeze and helm at the same time. There is a guy at our club who sailed a Byte, and then jumped and moved straight into a 600. He can handle it very well and is similar h/w to you. The best bet is to try one or get a boat see how you get on and if not sell it. But yes I don't think you will have a problem as long as you are agile and can move your weight quickly (or your swim a lot |

here is my predicament: i am 1.77m tall, 70 kg and i have a laser. i am not getting along with it very well, i can sail it fine its just not fun. i am thinking of getting a 600 but my mate got one last year and he couldnt sail it, he is lighter than me but had been singlehanding a laser 2 (not very well) before so i would have though he would have done okay. is it a big jump up from a laser to a 600? i have had trapeze experience on various boats (3000, 800, fireball) but not helming is this a wise choice for a next boat or should i consider something more stable? PS i sail in the solent so i have plenty of space and chop. there arent any other boats at hill head apart from a unicorn that are like a 600 but im not bothered about racing (if i was i would stick with the laser despite it being dull). |
