That's an approved method for getting people in. Best to turn the engine off while you do it.

Inappropriate boats! A good dinghy should be usable in anything short of a hurricane.... Either through reefing, or having a smaller sail to start with!!

The whole point of having a safety boat is so we can sail boats which wouldn't be suitable for crossing the channel at night singlehanded, with the knowledge that we each take it in turns to mind the others. The problem of getting heavy people aboard is a serious one. I've never tried the engine as step method, but have heard it works.

Over 180 junior Topper sailors sailed 3 races yesterday and another 3 races today at Weymouth - 18 gusting 25 knots and very cold both days. Photos at https://www.facebook.com/GBRTopper/

Very cold and windy where I am (30 miles from the South Coast). So we stayed at home, watched the England/Ireland highlights, had a nice Sunday lunch, and went and bought a new car.

When i did my dinghy instructor course, many many moons ago the approach for getting someone bigger than yourself out the water was to push them down as hard as you could and then use the buoyancy momentum when they popped back up to help you. Its not 'recommended' anymore though

It still crops up as a way to do it. Just warn them first!

We just use rope ladders tied to the grabrail of the safety boat that can be rolled over the side
