i was sailing at the weekend and some one called me on the mast to beam rule. am i right in thinking this rule no longer exists?

It was an extremely wooly definition of when a leeward boat had to stop luffing a windward one.

see i already knew about the mast to beam rule not being true anymore but how do you go about telling someone that on the water. its all well and good protesting but it ruins your race anyway especially as i couldnt get past him with out going under neith him and luffing at the end of the leg? (short legs at our club)
