Which Taser championship did you win?
Jeepers - I did just the one Tasar Nationals at Porthpean a decade plus ago and was a lowly 6th or 7th from memory sailing '748' which cost me the princely sum of £ 900 a few months previously and was really intended for family sailing only. My crew was offspring number 1 in his first championship in any class. So no pot for me but something for junior as 'highest placed kid' The thing he remembers most was the pod of dolphins chasing us along one of the reaches ... We did go on to win a number of good Tasar opens in the next couple of seasons before he went off racing single-handers ... Happy days. Well you did ask .. and just so we know ....what exactly was your point ? Mike L. Edited by blaze720 - 22 Jul 14 at 6:08am |

Yes, I was a little confused by 'Jeepers' comments? I am not sure he read my post properly.....I sailed the Nationals at Babbacombe about 8 years ago crewing my own boat. It was memorable in many ways. As far as I know no one swapped my wife....she certainly looks the same as the woman I have been living with for the last 45 years........
The point I was making is that Tasars are b**dy fast reaching in extremis, we could hold a 300 in bursts, can an Icon do that? |

...the point being, in terms of appearance and looking old fashioned, you could say that about clinker built Merlins, boxy GP14s, boxy and scow shaped Fireballs. It doesn't stop them being some of the most popular classes in the UK. I appreciate iiitick's comments were a personal view, but I think the class with it's new updated sailplan has a modern enough look for my money anyway. That said, having seen the Icon sailing on a number of occasions, I couldn't see the Tasar matching a well sailed one on any point of sailing in any weather conditions.

Thank you for that confirmation Jeep.....What I meant was, "Old fashioned in comparison with Icon", which had the potential to affect sales. There seems to be a direct comparison between the two classes whereas GP's and Merlin's are sort of unique unto themselves?

given this figure was pretty limited anyway, it's hard to see much negative impact....

can an Icon do that?
well yes .... and if the EN is anything to go by, and by implication at least, a tad faster as well. The EN however is not right of course but the boat is quick enough. Both the Tasar and Icon are NS14 derivatives that incorporated the current thinking and hull refinements of their respective times - The Tasar was really a stretched early 70's NS ... and Icon hull was of course derived very much later but is also stretched and for very much the same reasons. The NS is/was a development class and the inteveening decades arguably produced quicker shapes that are both faster all round and very much faster in lighter winds.... which is exactly why it was selected as the starting point for Icon. We have come up against a couple of decent 300's at some of the Sailjuice events and on most points seemed to be of similar speed - well perhaps between a Phantom and 300 would be more accurate if down to hair splitting. Anyway not too shabby for a 2-sail boat not developed round a 'speed at any cost' model - it is just very nice to sail, simple, light and forgiving and that was the whole point... good speed was the bonus. But of course we are just horribly biased ... iiitick - try one out yourself if you get a chance and if you don't get the opportnunity talk to the CA who can usually arrange a loan. Or perhaps try/borrow my own one... 'The 'Dancing Farmer' is doing farming sort of things at this time of year so I'm back in the singlehander for a month or two anyway ..... Mike L. |

I am taking the Hunts Icon to Hythe this afternoon, so expect more feedback from grumpf. The boat was sailed by lots of different helms and crew here, from fairly expert to relatively inexperienced. the only common negative comment was that it really needed a thwart to be comfortable for the crew in the light stuff. I'm not sure about that myself, but I can see the point. Otherwise the impressions were immensely favourable. For the helm it's a great sail; very smooth, great acceleration in a puff, relatively easy to set up and go.
It's unfortunate that Er Indoors didnt like it, otherwise I would have bought it, without doubt. I dont rule it out as a future purchase when she has more experience. |

Don't do the Thwart thing! You'll find that the boat is actually comfortable without it once the crew is used to it and it makes the boat much easier to move around in and get weight distribution right. By the way it is a great single hander too - if you like a work out!!!!
Don't worry about the new handicap the boat will sail to it once an owner knows the boat, and it IS faster than a RS300, especially in a blow, when many of the 300's are on their side, with helms swimming
