We were the only 49er there and I don’t remember seeing any slow boats on the launch ramp, (apart from a rs400 left blocking access with no sails up) in fact by the time I got to the start line all other starts had been set off and we were up next, I did however witness a lot of rs800's and int14's start late.

 

Common sense would denote that the slower boats hit the water 15-20 mins earlier giving the faster boats a chance to launch in time for the start.

No, it just means it started 30 minutes after the Topper. The Firefly, which is approx 130 points faster than a Topper, started at 15, so another 15 minutes would suggest a handicap of 1030 (1290, 1160, 1030). Of course, QM were altering handicaps where they deemed neccessary, so that could be wrong.

Hmmm thanks for that TT!!!  Tim, we pulled the other sticker off and it took about 30 mins as it kept breaking, i need the wife's hair dryer or wait until it warms up..  Rich, i think that may be the mark we rounded trying to get back on course after the extra mark debacle hence reaching up to it.  I can't remember.

If the 0 start time boat sailed for 150 minutes, and assuming that the RS300 sailed off its stock PY (it's 1000, so a nice convenient datum point), then the way to calculate the PY for any other class is:
 
PY = 1000 * ((150-T)/116)
 
Where T is the start time of the class you are interested in.
 
This gives:
 
Topper: 1293
Laser: 1112
Laser 3000: 1034
Phantom: 1017
Fireball: 974
I14: 802
49er: 698
Moth: 647
 
If my assumption is wrong and some other class sailed off its stock PY, then the formula becomes:
 
PY = PYD * ((150-T)/(150-TD)
 
Where PYD is the stock PY, T is the start time of the class you are interested in, and TD is the start time of the stock PY class.

No arguments with Mike's sums, but its usual to se the slowest boat as your base point for start time, simply because that's the one that defines the length of the race.
