I saw that at White Formula about 4 years ago when I collected my Blaze from them ... i was wondering when it would be found.

Yep, If it's the boat I think it is, there were two prototypes with slightly different hull shapes - one was more chined that the other. I don't know what happened to the project but whilst the prototypes were in GRP, the intention was to create the production boat as a roto-moulded single-hander in the Topaz range. When I saw them they were cobbled together with a selection of parts from various Topaz models. I was really interested in getting one and was hoping to see the finished article at the dinghy show but somehow it just never happened, Nigel Edited by Webmuppet |

I'm not sure if this comes under the heading of a dinghy
spy photo or a keel boat! I was lucky enough to get a sail in the first proto type of a single handed keel boat last night. It is being targeted at dinghy sailors that still want to sail small boats but are fed up with the gymnastics of modern dinghy sailing. Perhaps the more mature lady or gentleman. And I have to say that although this prototype had a cobbled together rig once it has its carbon mast and properly cut sails it will be a really nice boat. It was nice to sail a bout were you didnt have to work so hard to get the best out of it. Indeed it probably works better when its healed over a bit... Not sure on the exact weight but with its sensible keel and modern materials it will be about the same, or only slightly more than a traditional two man dinghy... so you might want a friend to help drag it up the beech but its still manageable in your average dinghy park. Apparently there is a builder already lined up and they are planning on bringing it to market for about the same price as a conventional dinghy! Ian Edited by Mark to add the photos for Ian! A couple more details here: http://www.vandercraft.co.uk/News=7 I was also lucky enough to be invited along for a sail last night, and what an interesting experience it was - quite unique. It's very much more a keelboat than, for example, Mark Giles' Orion SRD, which feels pretty much like a normal dinghy to sail till you get knocked over. This new boat feels like what i'd imagine an Int. Canoe would be like if you put a big lead bulb on the end of its 'board: you could hike or not hike according to whim, and while admittedly the winds were light, l was able to sail the boat upwind and down while crouched in the cockpit when I chose. The pics don't really show just how long and narrow the boat is, especially on the waterline, though she would still happily carry the owner plus a friend if required. The hull is very light, and there's lots of weight in the bulb. The big question for me is: should hiking be allowed in the class, or should the helm be limited to sitting on the side, such as in some keeboat classes. Given that the boat is designed to heel - i.e. it's more like an Elite than a Flying Fifteen - I think the target sailor would have more fun just sat on the side with his 'head out of the boat', thinking tactics - a bit like sailing an Illusion wherein you were allowed to sit up on the side out of the wet cockpit floor! It would also reduce the effect of different crew weights. |
