A very tense and exciting race, but it looks like Iain and Andrew's winning move was made at the windward mark, they were behind up the beat and then just after the windward mark they were in front of the swedes. So WHY did they cut away at that point to Rob and Shirley talking about how wet and windy it is???

I can see it's wet and windy, show me the race!

A few reasons for lifting the jib up on the run

1) It stops it flopping around when the hounds go forward several feet on th erun
2) It lifts the jib up into the stronger breeze aloft
3) If the boat rolls [and they can be really rolly with the kicker off downwind] the pole end can easily end up in the water during a roll to windward. If this happens it can push the already inverted mast beyound the limit and break it. The pole is around 9' long BTW. Having the jib and hence pole higher can give the skipper a wider margin of error before disater strikes.

It used to be that the jib was just lifted until the clew ring hit the pin on the forestay connector, some 16" up from the deck, but many boats are now using forestays that connect under the deck and allow the jib to go up to any height.

The mast is raked forward going down wind, this (amongst other things) loosens the jib luff making the jib fuller.

Clicky

Also it seems that the jib works better downwind when raised about a foot

Could someone explain how the jib/whisker pole system works? It looks like they loosen the foot of the jib about a foot and let it fly up like a spinnaker

That Star race was awesome.  As a skiff sailor I MUCH preferred watching that to that 49er medal race fiasco.

They look so complicated to sail, that rig and jib system is just bizarre!

Super result. 4 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. That's over half the medals available.

Fantastic results
But I think you need to check your maths - Perhaps you meant we got a medal in over half of the events (not quite the same thing).

It is the same thing in sailing with one competitor per nation - as a country you can only get a maximum of 11 medals, so getting 6 is fantastic.

No it is not the same thing!  But this is a Sailing forum not a Statistics forum so lets just agree that it is a fantastic set of results.

Either way, I really enjoyed the Star medal race and well done Team GBR.

As each county only has 1 competitor in each event GBR could only win 11 medals and we got 6. That's what I was getting at.
