I understand where you are coming from, in essence it is the section of the rules that applies to overtaking boats, but for the purposes of protests and calling rules it's better to keep referring to clear astern, clear ahead, overlapped and so forth... Doesn't mean the rules won't change it all again next year....

Yep you're probably right, however I shall be bearing that rule in mind when I am overtaking the slower boat in front, particularly if he or she is determined to stay clear ahead which is usually the case.

....by the way, I only commented about overtaking in order to attempt an understanding of radixons post. But on the plus side, I have found my rule book

? haven't heard of the fastest boat rule in racing?

Must mean the overtaking boat rule??

Really, what rule is that?

Dunno...ain't got a clue what I'm talking about    Can't find my rule book, last saw it when I chucked it at the cat which was trying to cr*p in the parlour palm.

Edit, found it.

Boats on same tack, boat clear astern shall keep clear of boat ahead.  i.e. if overtaking, keep clear of the boat you are overtaking (thats how I read it anyway, if I'm wrong please correct)

Not called the overtaking rule or the fastest boat rule but does apply to both situations.

Nope; no concept of "overtaking" in there.  Simply that a boat behind cannot sail up the back of a boat in front.

As soon as one boat is starting to overtake, either boat becomes windward or leward, and then other rules apply.

What is correct here?

Hi dopamaine,

I think that it all depends on where, when and how the boats became overlapped and whether or not they were within two boat lengths of each other (Rules 11 & 17).
