Sutton Sailing Club holds its first Topper open for 15 years

It’s been 15 years since Sutton held a Topper Open so we wanted to go in with a bang, and we certainly did just that. 20 boats set sail on the light and shifty day which included 12 visitors.

In the first race James Hill from Sutton SC was leading until the wind suddenly dropped and there was a raft of about six boats. James regained the lead which he held until the end. Georgina Fletcher (Sutton SC) was in second place, however she needs to learn to count and did not tack around the last mark and finish, she let Andrew Salt through to finish second and Georgina Fletcher dropped to 3rd.

Race 1
1st - James Hill - Sutton SC
2nd - Andrew Salt - Chelmarsh SC
3rd - Georgina Fletcher - Sutton SC

After a well-earned lunch the fleet headed onto the water for the second race and a new course. The wind had now picked up a little and some of the smaller sailors were struggling, the race was won by Andy Salt.

Race 2
1st - Andrew Salt - Chelmarsh SC
2nd - Carl Mitchell - Chelmarsh SC
3rd - Alistair Grey - Staunton Harold SC

The overall title was now up for grabs and between Andrew Salt, James Hill and Carl Mitchell. The race was extremely tight at the front for the first 3 laps between Andrew, Carl, Jenny Saunders, Seonaid Flemming and Sam Knight. Andrew sailed a great race and took the gun and the title.

2nd Sam Knight - Aldridge SC
3rd Carl Mitchell - Chelmarsh SC
