Lymington Town Sailing Club Winter Dinghy Series - Race 9

Only the hardy ventured out to take part in race 9 of the winter series. A strong cold easterly wind blowing against the incoming flood tide produced difficult conditions for the competitors, with many retiring after one lap for lunch and the Sunday papers.

In the fast fleet Luke and Emma McEwen in their RS800 were first to enter the festive spirit by trying to fly their spinnaker on the first run...they failed miserably.....as did the Try18 of Toby Collyer and John Levell, both ending upside down after a spectacular capsize.

The remaining two RS700s sailed by Richard Keating and Richard Lilley took the sensible option of leaving their spinnakers in the boat. At the finishing line Richard Keating just pipped Richard Lilley by a matter of seconds after his mainsail failed on tacking across the line. His verbal outburst was not considered Queen's English.

The medium fleet sailing a shorter course enjoyed a competitive race between the single and double handed dinghies. Richard Russell and Sylvia Weger the series leaders lost out to the RS Aeros of David Ellis and Neville Herbert on handicap. Tig Williams and Pete Conway in their 420 (with a combined age of over 120 years!) revelled in the conditions and came a well deserved second on handicap.

3rd Richard Lilley (RS700)

Medium Handicap:

1st David Ellis (RS Aero 5)
2nd Tig Williams & Pete Conway (420)
3rd Neville Herbert (RS Aero 7)

"Never have I felt such affection for a race committee in my life! It's over." Friday afternoon loomed closer and checking the forecast had become an hourly routine. The ten sailors signed up for the upcoming weekend - Lymington Dinghy Regatta - started getting itchy and it was exciting to hear messages pinging around. Posted on 18 Aug 2023
