Medway Dinghy Regatta 2016

by Christine Godber 22 Jul 2016 19:36 BST 2-3 July 2016

The Medway Dinghy Regatta was hosted and organised by Wilsonian Sailing Club on behalf of The Medway & Swale Boating Association over the weekend 2nd & 3rd July 2016.

The locally based MTS Cleaning Services was the lead sponsor, supplying tee shirts to all the competitors and helpers, with co-sponsors Harken and Allen providing carbon material sail bags, caps, sheet toggles, keys rings with small brass blocks and large blocks distributed by a tally number draw.

There were 6 starts and 8 fleets, Fast, Medium and Slow Handicap, Blaze, Streaker, Wayfarer, Juniors and 2000 class with the 2000 having the largest fleet of 11 boats.

Four races were scheduled with three to count there was an entry of 60 boats; 34 from the host club and 26 visitors, and 16 Clubs including contingents from the Broxbourne, Erith YC,Medway YC and as far away as Swanage (Doug Horner).

The weather on Saturday was South Westerly around Force 4 gusting 5 the forecast and including the rain had very shifty and gusty winds which made sailing challenging and almost certainly reduced the entries. The races started downwind so it was a colourful start with all the Spinnakers flying.

On Sunday the sun shone and brought with it excellent sailing conditions with a rising tide the South Westerly was reduced to a Force 2 and rising to a Force 3 in the afternoon attracting more sailors especially from WSC. There was a shorter lunch break and postponement on the Sunday for passing shipping and lack of beach to launch for the afternoon race.

This race was also affected by the Port Authority lifting of one of our racing Buoys 23 as the fast fleets approached it (cause of protest) but most including the visitors found quite amusing however the Race Box were only given 5 minutes notice.

As always Nick Champion visited us on the windiest day Saturday and you can visit his website for photos, www.championmarinephotography.co.uk

The shorter courses were effective and long enough under the weather conditions so everyone could finish in time.

Saturday evening concluded with a BBQ provided by the volunteers in the kitchen headed up by Carol Rodgers as was all the food over the weekend which was a splendid feast and the Panache Steel Band entertained with Afro -Caribbean rhythmical music for the rest of the evening.

Tim Kift and Jo Wicken (Alto) WSC led the fast fleet home with Jonathan Carter in Vortex from Rickmansworth coming up behind closely followed by Andy Hockey WSC.

The Medium fleet was won with two first out of the 4 races by Tony Hunt and Suzanne Hall in K1 followed by David Fenech and Alison Williams in a V3000 winning one race and a second and a third closely behind with Steven and Lin Worf in a Kestrel in third winning with a second third and fourth.

Jane Drummond WSC sailing a Lightening in her first single handed race in her new boat came first in two races and had a DNS and DNS as did the others in the slow fleet. Elena Balycheva Tideway sailability came second. Martin Mckay WSC came third.

Ian Foxwell (Blaze) dominated the 6 strong Blaze fleet, comfortably winning all four races, closely follows by Chris Saunders from Sheppey SC in second place with a couple seconds and a third to count Andy Hampton WSC made certain of third prize while Martin Jones WSC made fourth place.

Doug Horner (Streaker) won the contest and all four races with Amy Adams coming up behind and Christopher Smith with two second places but two DNS came third.

With entries of 10 Juniors, locally based in the London area at Docklands Sailing and Water Sports centre Leila Moore swept the board and won all four 4 races.

Grabriel Walsh who cycled 40 miles from central London on his bike from home to compete camped overnight then cycled home after racing on Sunday came in a close second in WSC club hired Feva. Richard Tutt came third but as did many of the other Juniors DNS 1st and 2nd race on the Saturday due to gusty winds.

In the 2000 class event Richard and Ian Hudson won 2 races and had DNS from Bough Beech SC Christopher and Gillian Jordan from Burghfield won one race and pipped the winners in the last race and Simon Conway/James Hardy DSWC came third.

The Bill Stewart Memorial Cup was awarded jointly to David and Sandra Wilson from Broad Water SC who over many years had been sailing in their Graduate in Medway Regattas since 1995.

Martin Vinton Commodore of Wilsonian Sailing Club presented the prizes.
