Island Sailing Club Evening Race Series - Day 9

by Richard Palmer 16 Jun 2016 13:47 BST 14 June 2016

The 9th race of the Evening Race Series was looking in doubt at 17.00 as the South Westerly breeze was continually having gusts of 28-32 knots in the Solent.

The wind started moderating and was recording 18-20 knots half an hour before the scheduled start, a check over the live risk assessment documents, and with the flag Yankee being displayed racing start on time for all classes. The late leaving from Southampton of two passenger cruise liners and a couple of car carriers added to the navigators' duties for the evening.

The courses were mainly windward-leeward type crossing to various buoys on the bramble bank and back, The highlight of the evening was the Flying Fifteens class, the 1947 Uffa Fox designed keelboat planning across the Solent, surfing on the waves with their spinnakers flying.

Harriet Butler in Comfortably Numb leading the first round was eventually caught by William Heritage in Freddy Flintoff who held off various challenges to end victorious on the day.
