27-30 May 2016
With temperatures touching 21.5 degrees out on the waters of Loch Fyne on Sunday it wasn't just the weather which was scorching. Crews took to the waters for day three of Silvers Marine Scottish Series and set some blistering times in good wind conditions. And, with just tomorrow to go there is still everything to play for in one of the most prestigious titles in yachting.
IRC Class 1 This class is turning into a real battle between Rod Stuart and Bill Ram's Aurora and Silvers Marine Scottish Series sponsor Jamie McGarry and Colin Moore's Eala of Rhu. With the wind blowing between 8 and 12 knots, team Aurora was able to find some extra pace in the conditions picking up a first and a second in the day's two races. The team, which has hardly put a foot wrong all weekend, goes into the final day three points clear of Eala of Rhu. However, tomorrow's forecast will be challenging, the type of conditions Jamie McGarry and Colin Moore relish, and they will fight to the end for victory.
IRC Class 2 Iain Thomson and Sloop John T have sailed a great campaign so far. However, they picked up an eighth place in the first race today, which they counted as a discard, but bounced back to secure up a first in the second race to lead John and Brian Hall's Something Else by five points and Kevin Aitken and Animal by six points going into the last day.
IRC Class 3 Roddy Angus and Dan Challis in Trastada are dominating this class. They have a great scoreline, picking up another two first places today, and still looking fresh out on the water. They haven't put a foot wrong all weekend and have managed to stay ahead of the very well sailed Lambay Rules. They just need to hold it together going into the final day but they are certainly sailing like class winners.
CYCA 5 Another first today for Richard Shellcock and Thrust who stay ahead of a pack of previous class champions including Valhalla of Ashton, Enigma and Salamander XXII. However, there is just three points separating the top three boats and this class will go down to the wire, having enjoyed some very close racing across the weekend. Thrust had a very good race today, and on corrected time, was five minutes ahead of second place Valhalla of Ashton and Alan Dunnet.
CYCA Class 8 This is a real battle going into the final day as David and Karen Parker's Slippi Gin slipped to second behind Brian Robertson's Celtic Spirit. However both boats are tied on points and it will be a real battle to the end. Today's good steady wind and shortened Inchmarnock race kept the class sailing a steady race.
CYCA Class 9 Ken Allan and S Shearer's Brave picked up another first today to stay ahead of Silvers Marine Scottish Series sponsor Boyd Tunnock who scored a second in Lemerac.
Sigma 33 James Miller's Mayrise, Harper and Robertson's Leaky Roof 2 and Donald McLaren's Sigmatic will be going all out for victory in the final day. Mayrise has sailed a very consistent regatta to go into Monday three points ahead of Leaky Roof 2 and previous class champions Sigmatic just a further three points behind.
National Sonata One Design Series B Wiseman and Guy Neville's Virtuoso are sitting just two points ahead of Douglas Paton and Edgy. This is a real battle, between both consistent racers, for first and second which will be decided on the last day.
VX One Brian Bennett and Ovington Boats of Sarasota Sail Squadron played their trump card today by picking up two firsts. This class could not be closer with just half a point separating them and Jono Shelley's Abracadabra. However the Irish team could certainly pull a rabbit out of the hat with two races scheduled for Monday.
Hunter 707 Seaword picked up another three firsts today to count the perfect scoreline going into the final day. This class is enjoying really close racing in good conditions.
