Notts County Sailing Club Junior Open

by David Eberlin 1 Jul 2015 13:46 BST 27 June 2015

Notts County Sailing Club has a vibrant Junior section of varying levels, from those just playing around in boats on a Saturday morning (about 40 every Saturday) to the more serious youth squad, of whom some are now in RYA Zone and development squads. The annual Junior Open attracted nearly twenty entries in great conditions.

Matt Buchan the Junior Rep takes up the story: An earlyish start brought beautiful blue sun shine mixed with a calm breeze set for a glorious day of sailing! 16 competitors were set for a highly contested junior open.

The Course was ready and off the juniors were rearing to go!

The first race was won by a youngster Will Thomas (Under 13) in his topper who had excellent day winning all three races closely followed by Chloe Willars in a laser 4.7. Despite a flying start from Oscar Concannon he managed 3rd in this race.

This was similar to the second race with Will edging the win, with Chloe 2nd but Matt Buchan coming third this time. Regardless of being first over the line for each race Matt was unable to prosper due to the handicap system!

After a long lunch and some of Paulene's fantastic lasagne everyone was set for the final race which brought slightly more wind. This again was won by Will Thomas who blew everyone out the water today (a massive congratulations to him) and 2nd went to Morgan Mullen who had a superb final race. Third went to Oscar once more.

Shoutout to Tim Cripps (aka Squad father) for encouraging and coaching the squad members to sail with such competence and to a competitive level which made the day so exciting!

Thank you to everyone who made this possible including John Sears, who was the race officer and also Morton boats for helping with the prizes.

We were joined by many of the Saturday racers for the prize giving and Nikki Theokritoff (commodore) also. And finally a special well done to the few who this may have been the first time they had raced, everyone did really well and hopefully had a great day!
