Salcombe Yacht Club Sailing Club Series Race 7

by David Greening 9 Jun 2015 13:25 BST 7 June 2015

Blue skies and a Force 4 to 5 South Westerly breeze greeted the competitors for the 7th race of the Salcombe Yacht Club Sailing Club series.

With low water, Race Officer Tim Law set the classic course to Blackstone, Gerston, Blackstone, Crossways and back to the Finish Line.

First away were the seven strong Junior Handicap fleet, though a few fell by the wayside in challenging conditions. Marin and Tom Ley's Mirror led Evie Booth home, with Elodie Grenan just behind in one of the Yacht Club's new RS Quba's.

Charlie Blazeby consolidated his position at the top of the Medium Handicap leader board, by scoring a comfortable win from Toby Rew, both sailing Laser Radials in the Medium Handicap Fleet.

Alistair Morley demonstrated what he could achieve in his Phantom when he turns up on time, by finishing ahead of the Ballantine's National 12 and the Squire Merlin Rocket, both on elapsed time and handicap.

It was a race of attrition for the nineteen Solos that started. Bruce Hattersley got it together on the first beat, rounding Blackstone ahead of Billy Jago and Chris Cleaves, however Jago, Cleaves and Peter Ballantine ground him down on the run through the harbour and the reach across Widegates, to round Gerston in that order, with Cleaves taking the lead on the return to the harbour.

A huge wind shift in the main harbour saw Phil King take the lead from Ballantine. Cleaves recovery plan was thwarted by an uncharacteristic capsize at Blackstone whilst in 2nd place.

King held the lead to Crossways, and covered Ballantine through the harbour; however youth triumphed over experience, when Ballantine snicked the win at the finish line.

In the Yawls, only two boats made the start-line, and with David Jayne nursing some gear issues, Peter Stratton and Nigel Hannaford, sailing Budgie, were able to build up a considerable lead which they held to the finish.
