Topper Travellers at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club

by Tom Aitchison 26 May 2015 13:06 BST 23-24 May 2015

On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May, Dalgety Bay SC hosted a Topper traveller/academy. Despite the varied weather, there was still lots of competitive racing and training throughout the weekend.

The weather on each day was very different; on the Saturday the wind was light and fickle which made it difficult to make way against the incoming tide particularly round the windward mark on the second race. Despite this, the Race officer (Gav Homer) managed to get two races in, finishing the second on a roving finish line.

Sunday brought very different conditions with plenty of wind. Those venturing out from the slip felt the full blast of the wind as they emerged around the headland sheltering the slipway with many being blown over. However the sailors got used to the challenging conditions, braving the wind and the cold and five races were fitted in, three before lunch and two after.

The results of the weekend were very close in the Boys with only one point separating first, second and third, with Tom Aitchison in 3rd, Andrew Homer in 2nd and Calum Bell in 1st place. Magnus Dixon did very well in coming 4th. In the girls, Ailsa Dixon came 3rd, Molly Tulett 2nd and Christine Wood came 1st in the girls and 6th overall.

In the Development Fleet, many were competing for the first time and were very brave to sail around the Main Fleet course in challenging conditions. Robbie Jack, Dalgety Bay S.C. came 3rd, Fergus Wilson LVSC 2nd and first went to Fraser Adams, Dalgety Bay SC in his first event.

Alistair Ferguson was very happy with his 1st in the Race 5 of the weekend and Finlay Tulett was delighted with his third on the second race on Saturday. Congratulations to Josh Hale, Rory Angus and Olly Carr for all getting a fifth in one of the races.

Thank you to RYA Scotland for running the training at the weekend; Gavin Homer for being a fantastic Race Officer, Dalgety Bay Sailing Club and their volunteers for providing an excellent venue and the catering team for the hot food at lunch times and the bacon rolls in the morning. Finally, a great big thank you to all of the parents for transporting us and our kit and for looking after us and doing running repairs through the weekend.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Loch Lomond!
