RC Laser TT at Chichester Yacht Club

by Dave Fowler 20 Apr 2015 18:01 BST 18 April 2015

11 helms arrived in the sunshine at Chichester Yacht Club, with a very nice Easterly 15 knot wind, all we needed now to make the perfect day of sailing was some water, and then like magic the tide obliged.

With the marks now laid just off the shore allowing for a port round P shape course, the practice race of 1 lap commenced, with all helms choosing to use the 'C' rig, race completed and the course & starting line now tweaked, the racing commenced. The line was quite short, which made for good boat handling and judgement.

There was a run of 4 races before a break was called, Dave Fowler took 3 bullets, and the other bullet went to local Helm Hugh Whitehead, by approx half a boat length from Fowler.

After the break the wind had increased, with some helms going for the 'D' sail, but those who stayed with the 'C' having the beater performance in the lulls and riding out the gusts. In the first race after the break saw Fowler and Treagust battling it out to the line again half a boat length in it with Treagust taking the bullet.

In the 2 remaining races before the water was judged to be replaced with mud, Fowler and a couple of others deemed it was time for the 'D' rig. With the water now ebbing very quickly from windward through the line, there was a new talkative from the locals by being above the line and diving back round the pin at the gun, but with the line now being port biased, this allowed the crafty Fowler to port end fly both starts with out any opposition, to disappear and gain 2 more bullets.

The 2nd and 3rd position was very close between Medway rivals Bryan Collins and Jamie Blair, with it ending in a tie, with the positions decided on count back.

It was a perfect day of sailing on the sea with us duck pond sailors leaning about this 'moving water', a big thanks to CYC for the event and Mark Harper for running the racing.
