Blaze burns the opposition
The forty-five boats that signed on for Lymington Town Sailing Club's fourth race of the Perisher Series were greeted with a relatively mild morning and broken sunshine.
After a busy slipway launch, shared with a visiting Laser fleet, the town's boats were keen to get started as the top of the leader board was starting to take shape. Predictably the charge to the line resulted in a general recall. The second attempt was more successful with only one offender, which saved the use of the black flag by the Race Officer.
With an incoming tide, and a slowly increasing breeze, the course took the competitors off on a reach out of the river and a short leg to 'Percentage mark' against the tide. After rounding, a quick leg back into the river line in 'Long Reach' was followed by a return visit to 'Percentage'.
By this time the fleet were sailing in handicap order and as they started the final reach home the Blaze, sailed by Myles Mence from Yarmouth, was always going to relish the conditions and this proved to be the case with an emphatic victory by two minutes on handicap. Series leaders Peter Barton and Dave Ellis, in their RS400, took second spot with another RS400, crewed by John Cooper and Becci Wigley, securing third.
The LTSC Perisher Series continues on Sunday with an 11:00hrs start from the LTSC river line. Sailors from visiting clubs are most welcome and further details can be obtained from the Sailing Secretary on 01590 674514.
