Power gives way to sail, and rowing is 'power'... right? Well in the National UK Inland Championships held at Tamesis Club on 27th September, National 18 374, going into a 'nice bit of pressure' on Starboard tack, decided that discretion was the better part of valour when faced with the sharp prow of the Queen's Royal Barge Gloriana charging at her at speed and at quite close range, rowed by sixteen powerful oarsmen. Even the sound of the sweeps in the wooden oarlocks was intimidating. As shown in the picture, a quick tack onto port was called for.
The picture also nicely sums up the results. 348, Antidote, sailed by Chris Pollard and Geoff Malseed won both the on-the-water-trophy and the handicap trophy after an RYA tie-break with 374, Zephyr, sailed by Ian Burnett and Anne Bayne. 369, The Goose Drank Wine, sailed by Rob Cruickshank and Barney Smith came third.
