As has been recent tradition Salcombe Yacht Club held two sets of Back to back races in the Range over the Bank Holiday Weekend in order to relieve boat overload in the crowded harbour. This gave an opportunity for the sailors of over 35 boats to stretch their legs in a gentle breeze but increasing in the Range.
The Race Officer, Geof Gilson set a starboard hand course around three marks between Starehole, Gammon and Lambury.
With the south westerly breeze shifting through 20 degrees most of the place changing took place on the beats, or on the marginal planing reaches.
In the first race, the 505 of Peter Colclough was first boat to finish, but the Merlin of Graham and Tamar Cranford-Smith, fresh from their National Championships, took the corrected time victory from the 505, with a brace of RS Fevas doing well to be in the mix on corrected time, followed by Tim Law in his Laser.
The wind had freshened for the second race, and a few returned for an early bath, if they had not bathed already. For the return match "Brigantes" the 505 made no mistakes and took the elapsed and corrected time victory from the Cranford-Smiths Merlin, whilst third, fourth and fifth places were separated by 2 seconds in the shape of the RS400's of McGregor, McLaren and Hicks, who revelled without the constraints of the harbour. The first Solo home was Simon Gibbens.
The Salcombe Yawls had separate starts, and the modern fleet Yawl of Dan Bridger and David Jayne was to dominate both of the races, taking victory in the first race from Andy and Liz Savell, with the classic boat of Peter Stratton and Nigel Hannaford a commendable third, and for the second race finishing ahead of Rob and Heather Adams and the Savells.
It was an excellent day's sailing which all the sailors enjoyed, only made possible by the help of the rescue and committee boat crews.
