Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation chosen as British Sailing charity

by Rebecca Jackson 22 Aug 2014 15:15 BST 22 August 2014

British Sailing, a group association of the British Marine Federation, has selected the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation (ASSF) as its official charity for the next two years. The charity will be supported through a number of fundraising events and will also benefit from promotion to the international sailing community. The first major event will be the 13th International Sailing Summit in November, with 50 per cent of the conference's profit being donated to the charity.

This support will be able to significantly help the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation to achieve its aim of transforming the lives of young people through sailing. The charity was set up in 2013 to honour the life and legacy of Andrew 'Bart' Simpson MBE, Olympic Gold and Silver medallist and America's Cup Sailor.

Iain Percy, Trustee of the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation, said: "We are delighted to be chosen as the official charity of British Sailing. Everything we do is driven by our belief that all young people have the ability to excel. This financial support will help us to provide as many young people as we can with opportunities to grow, achieve and inspire excellence, all through sailing."

Alice Driscoll, Chair of British Sailing, added: "Andrew was such a strong supporter of the marine industry and so it is fitting for our 140 plus members to help honour his life through donations to the Foundation. Our association is dedicated purely to promote and support sailing, which mirrors the aims of this wonderful charity. The 13th International Sailing Summit taking place in Amsterdam, the day before METS in November, is just the first event in our two-year programme and will help raise vital funds as well as the charity's global profile."
