Ogston Flying Fifteen Open hosted by Burton Sailing Club

by Chris Swallow 27 Jun 2011 13:06 BST 25-26 June 2011

Ogston’s scheduled Flying Fifteen Open meeting had to be cancelled because of lack of water. Burton Sailing Club kindly stepped in and hosted the meeting. The meeting attracted 14 entries, including 4 from Ogston and 4 from the new host Club. This meeting formed the first component of the 2011 TNT Travellers series. The weather was fantastic with brilliant sunshine and a good breeze.

Race Officer Dave Bell, recovering from a shoulder operation earlier in the week, was duly ferried out to the start area and set a variety of courses for the Saturday afternoon. Race 1 went to Andy McKee sailing his dad’s boat (with, presumably a promise to look after it) with Rich Jones followed by Richard Hope and Scott Smith with Chris Swallow with Richard Nurse in 3rd. Arthur and Andrew George took race 2 with Rod Rowlands and Mick Scoles 2nd and Colin Butler and Robin Smedley 3rd.

A pattern for the weekend started to emerge in races 3 and 4 with Andy McKee winning both followed by Richard Hope with Andy Goddard in 3rd.

Sunday morning saw the fleet joining in the Ernie Hewkin Memorial pursuit race with a good number of club boats including several juniors who were having their own race within a race for the prize money generously donated by Ernie’s family.

The final race of the open followed immediately after the pursuit with Andy McKee winning followed by Richard Hope with the Georges 3rd. This was also the finishing order for the Open meeting. Flying Fifteen 419, built in Cowes 50 years ago, and helmed by Rod Rowlands finished forth overall.
