49er Nationals at Hayling Island Sailing Club - Overall

by Dave Hall 25 Aug 2009 13:53 BST 22-28 August 2009
Hayling Island SC were hosts to the 2009 49er national Championship. The UK class decided that it would sail this year’s domestic events using the original rig, this has proved to be a good move since the championship attracted 26 teams from all over the country. Many of the top GBR squad teamed up with sailors not currently in the squad and got themselves an enjoyable long weekend racing.

Day one brought typical glorious Hayling weather – sunshine and a 10 knot southerly breeze. Through the afternoon the wind softened allowing the lightweights to dominate and with some of the highest tides of the year a number of the fleet fell foul of the black flag.

After 3 races James Peters and Dicken Mclean head up the leader board but they sailed with the new rig so their result didn’t count towards the National Championship. Phil Walker & and Rob Thomas lie in second and therefore lead the championship at the end of the day. The Irish team of Alistair Kissane and Ronan Wallace sailed a steady day to end up third. Some of the expected front runners are counting black flags so were not yet in the running.

Hayling bay provided sun but not a lot of wind for day 2. The HISC race team managed to get the three scheduled races completed in the light conditions. With the strong current running again choosing the best route around the tide was more important than the wind shifts. In race one some of the competitors missed the first start having left the beach a little late and not appreciating the length of the sail to the race area.

After the discard had kicked in the results looked more true to form, Dave Evans & Ed Powys lie in first place but were on equal points with Simon Hiscocks & Harvey Hilary with just the discard splitting them. Phil Walker & Rob Thomas in 3rd with the Hare twins pulling up to 4th after a good day.

On the final day it was always going to be a close call between the two top teams of Hiscocks & Hilary and Evans & Powys.

The day provided two contrasting races. The first in light winds, won by Evans and Powys gave them a narrow lead. For the final race the wind came in to provide classic 49er conditions, Simon Marks & Jonny Clegg took the win with Evans & Powys in second to take overall victory. Hiscocks & Hillary were unlucky – just after the start their main halyard broke. They capsized and tied it up but by this time were almost a lap behind. However, they finished the race to hang on to second overall. Rick Peacock & Alec Boere finally putting in some good results pulled up to third. First Under 21 team was Tom Durham & George Hand.

A note from the class

Racing will continue in the UK using both the original rig and the new rig. Prizes will be given for both rigs at future events.
