Another successful day

An overcast sky greeted competitors for the second day of the Inland Championships at Grafham Water. Concerns that the wind would strengthen from the previous day’s blustery conditions were unfounded and the fleet launched into a Force 3 South Easterly gusting to Force 4.

For the first two races of the day, the fleet sailed the outer loop of a trapezoid course. Sophie Dingwall & Chris Sycamore in 5000 lead at the windward mark in the first race from joint overnight leaders Will Kennedy & Rhos Hawes in 8539, followed by Abigail Croft & Matt Shorrock in 8363 and Lewis Frost & Matt Sim in 9382. Fifth place was held by Arthur Henderson & Matt Currell in 8561, with Jess Quinlan & Alex Warrington in 8407 in sixth place. By the top of the first loop, Will & Rhos and Arthur & Matt had pushed Sophie & Chris back into third. However, by the top of the following loop Sophie & Chris had recovered their lead and held on to take the gun from Will & Rhos and Arthur & Matt. Fourth place was taken by Abigail & Matt with Hugo & Guy Pullen sailing 9668 fifth and John & Alex Page in 8521 sixth.

In the fifth race, Jess Quinlan & Alex Warrington in 8407 led at the windward, followed by John & Alex Page in 8521, Hugo & Guy Pullen in 9668, Chris Brewer & Ole Alcock in 8997, Will Kennedy & Rhos Hawes in 8539 and Oliver & William Palierakis in 9005. John & Alex had taken the lead by the top of the first loop and held on to take first place from Will & Rhos and Arthur Henderson & Matt Currell in 8561. Dominic Langdon & Shaun Spring in 8229 finished fourth, followed by Chris & Ole and Jess & Alex.

The conclusion of the fifth race allowed a discard to be taken and going into the final race of the championships, Will Kennedy & Rhos Hawes led with 12 points from Arthur Henderson & Matt Currell on 16, Hugo & Guy Pullen on 21 and Sophie Dingwall & Chris Sycamore on 22.

The Race Officer set a triangular course followed by two windward/leeward loops with a windward finish. The wind speed had dropped steadily during the break for lunch and the fleet started in a Force 2 which strengthened to Force 3 by the time the leaders were into the loops. Sophie and Chris led into the windward mark and held on to take the gun despite the efforts of Will & Rhos to take their first bullet of the event. Arthur & Matt were back in 20th place at the first windward mark, but recovered strongly to finish in fifth place, with Alex Frost & Will McMahon in 8402 and Oliver & William Palierakis sailing 9005 in third and fourth respectively.

With three second places and two fourth places, Will Kennedy & Rhos Hawes in 8539 took the Inland Championships with 14 points. Second place went to last year’s National Champions, Arthur Henderson & Matt Currell in 8561 who were seven points behind, having won the second race. Third place was taken by Sophie Dingwall & Chris Sycamore with two victories and a sixth, seventh and eighth place for a total of 23.
