Twenty competitors took part in the Europe National Championships at Lancing Sailing Club over the weekend of 26/27 July, including five entries who had travelled from Belgium.

On Saturday morning a light northerly was displaced by the sea breeze and the first race got away on time at midday in a south westerly force 3 with wall to wall sunshine. The first of three back to back races was led home by Chris Gill followed by Gareth Williams and Cristophe De Blieck.

With the wind freshening slightly for race 2, De Blieck led the fleet home, followed by Gill and Williams. Race 3 saw De Blieck again show his mastery of the perfect sailing conditions to lead home from Gill with Mario Colombie this time taking third place.

Sunday morning dawned hazy but by the time the first start got away a force 2 sea breeze was established. This time, in the lighter winds, 16 year old Maite Colombie used her light weight to good advantage to win from De Blieck with another youth Brett Hill taking third place. Again the wind freshened just slightly and in glorious sunshine De Blieck posted another two bullets with Gill and Williams sharing the minor places.

With 4 firsts, Cristophe De Bliecke took the Rondar Open Championship trophy as well as the Manulife Trophy for best result with no discards. Chris Gill won the Whiplash Trophy as the UK National Champion. Katie Mapplebeck was the first Lady, Brett Hill was first Youth and first Newcomer, and outgoing class chairman Richard Eagleton took the Roaring Forties veteran’s trophy.

On the Friday immediately preceding the championships, the Europe class held a training day. With coaching provided by Shirley Robertson’s Sydney 2000 Olympic coach (and Lancing member) Mark Littlejohn, it proved to be a very informative day for those attending, as well as a challenging one, with the sea breeze increasing to force 5 by the time they came off the water.
