J/24 Worlds at Cannigione, Sardinia - Day 3

by J24 Arzachena & Chris McLaughlin 12 Jun 2008 07:48 BST 8-13 June 2008

Light wind and only one race today in Cannigione. The wind was at times flukey, as described by Tom Quinn: "Next upwind got jammed in at the left gate, rounded ok, and headed across the fleet to the right again - hmm, this time the right lifted and lifted and lifted… We sailed a great circle route and joined the last downwind toward the back…"

The top boats didn’t fare too well either with the top three from yesterday, Canadian Milev Rossi, Brazilian Maurico Santa Cruz, and American Mark Hillman finishing out of the top 10. Rossi, driving for Bob Turner and his British boat, Serco Headcase, finished 44th today. The race was won by German Stephanie Koepcke, currently in 36 position overall, followed by Italians Gaetano Pellizzaro and Andrea Casale.

Now that five races are on the books the throw away comes into play. With his third place finish today Casale moved into first overall. Santa Cruz with his 14th place dropped to fourth leaving Milev Rossi and Mark Hillman at 2nd and 3rd. Brazilian Daniel Glomb, Ian Southworth from Great Britain, and American Keith Whittemore, who finished 6th today, rounded out the top 7.

Grim, light conditions throw regatta open (from Chris McLaughlin)

A win for Germany’s women’s team

Day three of the J24 World Championship in Cannigione, Sardinia saw just a single race as winds failed to top 10 mph and often disappeared completely. Many of the regatta hopefuls were thrown by these most difficult and erratic light conditions.

Race 5 was delayed by two hours and eventually began only with the aid of a Z flag and a 20% penalty to early starters.

Ian Southworth and Andrea Casale won the pin and worked toward pressure on the left of the course. At the Committee boat end, a few boats tacked immediately and headed to the right, led by Britain’s Gavin Watson in Roger Rabbit and Germany’s Stephanie Koepcke, with her women’s team on Vega Reederei. The wind flicked but gradualy built left , but not before boats from the extreme right, including Watson, Koepcke and Gaetano Pelizarro in the aptly named Magic Fate had rounded, with Casale in Fiamma Gialle fourth and Southworth sailing Inmarsat Hedgehog fifth. Places were unchanged down the run and the leaders, with the exception of Casale took the right hand leeward mark, then all began a slow port tack hall to the right. The USA’s Keith Whitemore on Furio rounded behind them at the left mark and immediately pressed right.

As Watson and Koepcke went further ahead, the wind died completely leaving Southworth and Casale on port making little progress. Whitemore found breeze at the right hand shore and sailed into the leading pack whilst Southworth and Casale tacked toward new pressure on the left. For the next ten minutes the pair tried to find pressure, as Santa Cruz and others caught up and joined them on the left. Casale, more inshore, dropped back in no pressure, and Southworth could only hold on port underneath an increasing pack of boats. When it finally arrived, it lifted Casale back up from ninth place to third and the port lift left Southworth in the mid teens.

With a change of course signalled, the leaders hoisted spinnakers and headed to the now favoured left hand beat area. Southworth, trying to regain positions opted against reaching up, away from the finishing line with a procession of boats and tried a more leeward course directly to the Committee boat. The wind then freshened slightly and turned into a tight reach to the finishing line costing him further places.

At the finish line there was no gun for Watson and the Roger Rabbit team, judged premature starters, so it was Stephanie Koepcke and the women’s team on Vega Reederei who took line honours from Gaetano Pelizzaro and Italian National Champion, Andrea Casale, followed by Klaus Walkusch of Denmark, Dirk Strelow of Germany and Keith Whitemore.

After a further one hour delay, all racing was abandoned for the day. Three races are scheduled for Day four, with the start being brought forward by one hour. Slightly stronger wind is forecast and Day 5 is threatening winds of 26-35 mph.

Ian Southworth finished seventeenth and comments: “This was a frustrating day. This race may well have been the Series hinge. A top five would have put us right in contention for the Worlds’ title, but we are only half way through the racing and we will stay focused.”

Andrea Casale leads the series on 23 points, with Rossi Milev on 24 points, Mark Hillman on 25 points,Santa Cruz 25 points, Glomb on 39 points and Southworth on 40 points.
