Battle in brisk breeze

In the North of the County near Chapel-en-le Frith, a very blustery Combs Sailing Club welcomed members of Derbyshire Youth Sailing, on Saturday 19th May to the third event of the series. Just eleven sailors’ took part and used all their skills and experience to battle with the brisk breeze. The entry was much reduced as many regular Derbyshire Youth Sailors were away competing at National events.

Parents and siblings were gathered on the shore watching the racing and enjoying the spectacle of their young sailors facing the challenge of the conditions. In the first race Harry Levick (15) from Carsington SC was leading, but had to retire through a knee injury, and Ben Crossdale (14) from Ogston SC finished in first place, with Alisdair Pears (15) from Carsington SC second and Craig McCarthy (16) from Burton SC third.

In the second race it was Craig who took the honours and again Alisdair in second with Ben third. Everyone came in for lunch and a well earned rest. With three sailors now equal on four points and the wind still blowing strong there was everything to race for.

Sue Lucas, DYS Rep. for Combs SC said “It is great that the racing is so close especially in these conditions. These young sailors are really enjoying themselves and it is good to know that Harry Levick has recovered and is okay.”

Six boats battled for the best position on the start line of the third race, first round the windward mark was Jenny Saunders (15) from Staunton Harold SC, with Craig in second and Ben in third. The race was close right to the end, and finished with Ben taking first place, with Alisdair taking second and Craig finishing in third.

The overall winner for the day was Ben Crossdale sailing his Topper dinghy, Alisdair Pears in his Laser 4.7 dinghy was second and Craig McCarthy sailing his Laser Radial dinghy, finished third.

Shirley Crossdale commented “It has been a really exciting day and I am certainly very pleased for Ben who sailed well throughout the races. It is amazing how these young sailors cope with the strong winds and watching them enjoy the thrill of high speed sailing and close tactical battles is fantastic fun.”

The next Derbyshire Youth Sailing racing series event is at Ogston Sailing Club near Matlock on Saturday 9th June. Briefing is at 10:30 with the first race at 11:00. It is still not too late to enter the remaining races in the series and challenge for the series trophies. Details and pre-event registration is available, along with lots more information and some excellent photographs of Saturday’s event in the gallery, all on the www.dysailing.com website.
