The Annual National School Sailing Association Championships held at Oxford Sailing Club, Farmoor Reservoir in Oxfordshire was won by Nick Redding & Adam Hilton 29er of Oxford. The event attracted 56 boats from counties across the UK with racing taking place on the 26th and 27th of May.

The event was sailed in a range of boats with specific Laser and Topper fleets. The weekend produced high quality competition. For some of the competitors this was their first experience of racing. There was excellent racing with light airs on the first day freshening on the second.

Overcast skies and a gentle force 2 greeted competitors on Saturday morning. A great variety of boats was visible on the start line, including an RS Feva that had preferred the NSSA Championships to their own being held at Whitstable.

The fleets were split into three stars; Handicap, Lasers & Toppers.

Claire Lasko & Tim Saxton took an early lead in the 420 despite the light airs. The 29ers of Nick Redding and Adam Hilton followed the 420s closely, ahead of last year’s winners Oscar McVeigh and John Mather.

Lasko & Saxton were successful in the second race of the day, with Paul Turnhill sailing a Laser in close second. Guy Stephens & Nick Bennett-Jones were in third position. More rain and wind was forecasted for Sunday with competitors experiencing a wet night on the campsite.

The weather forecast for Sunday proved to be justified with even more rain, but many smiling competitor’s faces. The 29ers eventually managed to plane on the reaches of Sunday’s breeze where the fleets managed to finish racing for a 12:00 lunch.

The rain finally stopped after lunch and the 29ers pulled out a substantial lead on the water. This lead enabled the 29ers to establish a significant lead on handicap forcing the 420 of Lasko & Saxton down into second place with Nick Redding and Adam Hilton from Oxford taking the overall lead. Last Years winners Oscar McVeigh and John Mather came third in a 29er.
