With sun, a good wind and reasonable temperatures, Saturday the 24th April started out with great promise and as 23 boats were rigged at Burton Sailing Club we knew our second Derbyshire Youth Sailing event of the year was going to be a good one.

With a fair wind blowing all of our young sailors got off to a good start It didn't take long for the Byte C11, Lasers and Comets to pull away for their own battles with the added mix of our only double hander, the Feva, making good use of their spinnaker. With quite a few position swaps throughout the field it wasn't long before the horn sounded and everyone came in for a well-earned lunch. It was good to see that Burton had the BBQ ready and waiting.

During lunch the gusts picked up a little, but it didn't put off our buzzing sailors who were keen to get out for the next two races. Race 2 started with a wind shift and a slightly early start by most of the Lasers, giving the rest of the fleet a slight head start. Not wishing to suggest our young DYS sailors are very competitive but there were some excellent battles taking place and judging by the (socially distanced) crowd gathering outside the club house it was causing quite a stir, after all there were nine Toppers out on the water all wanting to be the first one home.

After the afternoons two races it was time to pack the boats away whilst the results were sorted. You know when its been a good day by the length of time it takes to wrap everything up, there was definitely quite a few excited tales to tell.

Huge congratulations to all of our sailors who took part, some for their first DYS event, but especially to our winners.

The 1st May will see us at Swarkestone Sailing Club for a training event in preparation for our third race day on the 15th May at Staunton Harold Sailing Club. For more details on events, DYS, eligibility and registration please visit our website www.dysailing.org
