Fox 2-up Series at Shanklin Sailing Club - Race 1

by Chris Read 16 Apr 2006 10:14 BST

Following on from the sprint race, the 2-up gives us the opportunity to sail with a crew, which is not the norm in this class. The lighter the crew the better, epecially for the larger, heavyweight helms of which there is quite a number in Shanklin! Usually wives or children are kidnapped from home or kicked out of bed for the privilege of sailing with Dad. Some of those who cannot achieve this vie for the lighter members of the club in the hope that they don’t get left with Erling! Still, if somebody had to have him - just as well it was the Australian!

Stuart and Charlie Pierce had a great start, and lead for the first lap. Chris Read/Andrew Cavacuiti were close behind. On the second lap, Stuart and Chris tacked early for the wing mark, and found a wind shadow which combined with a strong current put them the wrong side of the course. Bob and Will Baker took advantage and rounded the mark first, with the others a long way behind. Jan Routledge/Keith Newnham also took advantage and rounded in third. Although the pack were closing slightly, Bob and Will took first place, Chris/Andrew second, and Jan/Keith third.
