Race 6 of the Lymington Town Sunday early Points series was held on Sunday 22nd in what were nearly Mediterranean conditions with sun shining from the blue sky, a breeze building to 14 knots from the south west but quite chilly with it.
After a short delay to allow the competitors to assemble at the committee boat, the fast fleet started on a windward-leeward course. The legs were about three quarters of a mile long, but with a strong flood tide the beat must have felt a lot longer. The F18 cat completed 5 laps of the lap-timed course which scaled down to 4 laps for the International 14 and B14 and 3 laps for the RS400 and D-One. The win went to Dougal Harris in the F18 with Gary Stones and Alex Hayman second in the B14 and Kevin Podger and Heather Chipperfield third.
22 boats started in the medium fleet. Their course was a short beat followed by a long run to take them inshore for another less tidal beat before reaching back out to complete the lap. The front of the race saw a tussle between the Merlins of John Cooper/Becci Wigley and Mark Barwell/Louise Johnson. Behind them Richard Russell/Sylvia Weger in the Tasar would not be dropped and closed on the Merlins in the final stages. Ryan and Hannah Buchanan followed closely in their Scorpion along with a gaggle of RS Aero 9s lead by Pete Barton. Dave Ellis led the RS Aero 7s.
The results showed a good mix of classes. The Tasar was first followed by the Scorpion, the two Merlins then the RS Aero 7 and the RS Aero 9, Dave Ellis beating Pete Barton by just 14 seconds.
Racing takes place every Sunday morning from Lymington Town Sailing Club. For further details contact the Sailing Secretary on 01590 674514 or e-mail .
