36th Lake Garda Optimist Meeting - Country Cup

by Elena Giolai 29 Mar 2018 07:31 BST 29 March - 1 April 2018

Switzerland wins the 4th Country Cup with Maxime Thommen, followed by France on 2nd place and Italy on 3rd with Fraglia's Mattia Cesana.

On late afternoon the 1.400-sailor parade through the streets of Riva del Garda and the official opening of the 36th Lake Garda Optimist Meeting.

The Garda Wind Garda Village is already lively - shopping stands, relax and physical activities

Twenty-nine helmsmen representing as many countries took part in the 4th edition of the Country Cup, for which two very short and fast races were sailed. France and Switzerland have been neck to neck for the entire regatta, but despite the same scoring, Maxime Thommen (4-1) prevailed and the French Sacha Baraz (1-4) came in second. Thrilling finish for the Italian Mattia Cesana, who after the first wavering race (7) managed to get really close to the first position on race two: he finished third, just few centimetres before the French allowing him to final rank 3rd, preventing Baraz to win and leaving final 1st place to Thommen.

The fleet races of the 36th Lake Garda Meeting will start on Thursday and will be divided into 6 heats for the Juniors (12-15 years old) and into 2 for the Cadets (9-11 years old). The qualifying heats to the final Gold Fleet (Sunday) will be sailed until Saturday.

If it is true that on Garda trentino water a real show will take place with 1.400 Optimists sailing the regatta, it is also true that the Meeting will offer so many chances to enjoy one's time on land as well, with sensorial and physical activities thanks to Garda Wind Garda. Fraglia Vela Riva together with Riva del Garda FiereCongressi are offering to all participants, their families and coaches a series of facilities and special consideration that are the proof of increased logistics quality. This aims to be the reward and show gratitude to so many participants who believe in the organization of this event, breaking year after year new records, that go beyond the Guinness World scored some years ago.
