Strong winds don’t sway celebrating Aussies on day three at World Cup Series Miami

The breeze came roaring in for day three racing at the World Cup Series in Miami, but Nacra 17 pair Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin and Laser sailor Tom Burton marked Australia Day by each extending their leads to be well positioned with medal races nearing.
Rio silver medallists Waterhouse and Darmanin came third, second and first in the three Nacra races for the day to consolidate their overnight advantage to 19 points over the crew that won gold in Rio, Argentina's Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza Saroli.
Burton came sixth in each of the two Laser races to build a 10-point break over Germany's Philipp Buhl.
"It was a tough slog out on the water today, 20 knots or so, and some close racing," said Burton, who won the gold medal in Rio.
"I had a nice start in the first race and had some tight racing at the front. The second race was fairly different with not such a great start and I then missed a big shift and needed to fight back from 30th. So I'm quite happy to come away with two decent results.
"Tomorrow looks windier so I'll need some good rest tonight for the big winds of tomorrow."
Fellow Australian Sailing Team Laser competitor Matt Wearn grabbed a three and nine to move from 16th into the top 10, and Finn Alexander is in 41st in the 70-boat fleet.
Nacra duo Tayla Rietman and Lachlan White are 18th, while 49erFX team Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot are 12th in their 21-boat fleet.
