The Olympics have gone and that means one thing to the racing sailor – we'll be playing to a new set of rules in January! Yes, on 1st January 2017 the new Racing Rules of Sailing come into force.
Do you know what the changes are? And how well do you really know the rules anyway?
Fortunately help is at hand in the form of two new books written by Bryan Willis and published today. They've been fully updated for the 2017-2020 rules and we at Fernhurst Books, being keen racers, have been through them with a fine toothed comb. It's been fun working with an expert like Bryan, asking him all the rules questions we could think of and making sure they are answered in these books.
The Rules in Practice 2017-2020 takes you through the key situations that occur repeatedly on the race course showing, from the point of view of each boat in turn, what you may, must, or cannot do. The latest rule changes are highlighted, along with their impact on you as a sailor.
In addition to Bryan Willis' clear and expert commentary, this book helpfully contains the new Racing Rules of Sailing in full, with all the Appendices: all for only a little more than the cost of a copy of the racing rules alone. You get both and you can get them today!
This book has been our racing rules bible for over 30 years and is one of the most anticipated sailing books of the year!
Racing Rules Companion is more compact: it summarises the basic principles, definitions and rules, and then covers every aspect of the race succinctly. Put simply, every racing sailor should have a copy!
Splash-proof and spiral bound, this handy little companion stands up to frequent use and serves as a great aide-memoire that will fit into your pocket or kit bag.
Both books have colour diagrams throughout to ensure the concepts are easily understood.
Bryan Willis is a leading authority on the rules of yacht and dinghy racing. He has been chairman of the jury and chief umpire for some of the most prestigious sailing events in the world, including the America's Cup and Olympics. He served on the International Sailing Federation (now World Sailing) Racing Rules Committee for over 25 years.
Published as books and eBooks, these new titles are available to buy from all good bookshops, websites, chandleries and direct from www.fernhurstbooks.com.
